Driving Eureka! Problem Solving with Data Driven Methods and the Innovation Engineering System
by Wanda Jewell
Doug Hall is fascinating. I remember when he came out with Jump Start Your Brain I was so impressed with his energy and mindset. I was given the opportunity back then to visit his Eureka! Ranch and many times have looked back on that missed opportunity with regret. When I saw that he was going to be at Winter Institute in Memphis, TN, and that Richard Hunt of AdventureKeen was his publisher, I was determined to secure that opportunity again. I didn't know then that Doug Hall is a Robin Hood of sorts. He works with the largest corporations to provide the funds to give back to the smaller companies, like indie bookstores.
Fast forward, Doug Hall invites all of the Regional Boards and Staffs to Eureka Ranch for two and a half days. Booksellers are calling me to find out - What is he selling? What's the deal? Why is he doing this? - and this is why - Doug Hall's mission is to "change the world through systems that enable innovation by everyone, everywhere, every day." And I'm hear to tell you two things: 1. He is well on his way. 2. You want to be part of this.
Doug Hall is an inventor, researcher, and author. He’s a chemical engineer by education who rose to the rank of Master Marketing Inventor at Procter & Gamble. At P&G, using the principles that would become Innovation Engineering, his team of three invented and shipped a record nine innovations in just twelve months. He’s been named one of America’s top innovation experts by A&E Top 10, Inc. Magazine, The Wall Street Journal, DATELINE NBC, CNBC, CIO Magazine, and the CBC.
Innovation Engineering is a new field of academic study and leadership science focused on System Driven Innovation. It applies Dr. Deming’s System of Profound Knowledge, made famous in manufacturing during the 1980s, to strategy, innovation, and how we work together. It’s taught as an undergraduate minor and graduate certificate on college campuses and through off-campus executive education programs that include Innovation Engineering Black Belt (mastery), Silver Belt (leadership), and Blue Belt (innovators).
I'm so excited and grateful that Doug has agreed to spend time with SIBA Booksellers. He will be at Innisbrook for a four hour session with booksellers on Wednesday morning. Everyone can innovate and Doug will share the tips & tricks to getting to the meaningful uniqueness that translates into innovations. Don’t just take my word for it!
"The days spent at Eureka! Ranch were among the most productive of any "retreat" I've been involved in...and, I've been involved in many. Doug guided us through numerous ways of thinking about issues and creating innovative solutions. I would encourage everyone to take advantage of Doug's amazing sessions."- Chuck Robinson (former owner Village Books, founder of Chuck Robinson Associates)
"The weekend retreat at Eureka! Ranch made me re-think many of my processes and systems, compelling me to break down the walls of the stagnant models I had build and relied upon. I've since utilized the training I received to better empower my staff, freeing up more of my time for innovation and creative work. I highly recommend training with Doug Hall."--Nicole Sullivan (Bookbar)
"The (free) tools that Doug Hall provided through his Innovation Engineering allow me to approach challenges with a new perspective and a structure by which to engage and empower others around me in meaningful ways."-Ann Seaton (NCIBA Staff)
"Doug's weekend retreat at the Eureka! Ranch was a fully comprehensive weekend filled with information, knowledge, innovation, excitement, and ideas.....ideas.....ideas!!! I highly recommend anyone to take advantage of an opportunity to be a part of this program!"--Donna Fell (Sparta Books)
"Doug's retreat at the Eureka! Ranch was one of the most creative experiences I've had in a training session. He really helped me think outside the box. His ability to be innovative and to explain his concepts to us was unique and downright inspiring. To have the opportunity to sit in a session with him would be a real treat not to be missed!" --Stephanie Crowe (Page & Palette)
