What SIBA Booksellers have to say:
The Comfort of Crows: A Backyard Year by Margaret Renkl
Margaret Renkl has given us a remarkable gift. With keen observations of nature in her backyard, she helps us become better observers in our world.
– Lia Lent from Wordsworth Books in Little Rock, AR
Let Us Descend by Jesmyn Ward
History, family, community, and the all encompassing power of life in the face of brutality are abundant in Ward's work, no less here in Let Us Descend. Jesmyn Ward has delivered another amazing novel and gift to readers.
– Michelle Cavalier from Cavalier House Books in Denham Springs, LA
All That Consumes Us by Erica Waters
Erica Waters never disappoints with her dark and queer tales. I loved every bit of this dark academia story.
– Katlin Kerrison from Story on the Square in McDonough, GA
Family Meal by Bryan Washington
There are two things I expect from a Bryan Washington narrative: food rendered so exquisitely I could lick the page and an emotional excavation so expansive it swallows the book and me with it. Family Meal delivered.
– Miranda Sanchez from Epilogue Books Chocolate Brews in Chapel Hill, NC There Was a Party for Langston by Jason Reynolds, Jerome Pumphrey (Illus.)
This is a stunning picture book -- Jason Reynolds has a way with words that maybe no one has had SINCE Langston Hughes. Poetic yet approachable; his style is unique.
– Jamie Southern from Bookmarks in Winston-Salem, NC

NVNR Takeaway: School Book Fairs & Inventory Management
recap from Melissa Taylor, E. Shaver, booksellers in Savannah, GA
This NVNR Session addressed the inventory logistics of school book fairs. There are so many ways to do this whether the fair is in-school, in-store, or online. Where are books being shipped? How do you handle the sales in your POS? The session was lead by Molly Gilroy Olivo, Manager, Child's Play, Washington, DC and Melissa Taylor, Co-Owner, E. Shaver, bookseller, Savannah, GA
Title Curation
Almost the first topic discussed was title curation for book fairs. Although the session was focused on the logistics of managing inventory, the topic of how to select books for a school book fair was of special interest to attendees and there was an in depth discussion.
Child's Play Bookstore, for example, works from a standard set list, which they customize as needed for each book fair.
E. Shaver, on the other hand, creates new lists from scratch for each book fair with an emphasis on new titles. To help with the list selection, they send a google form link to the head of the book fair at the school to disseminate to teachers to get some of their input into titles they would especially like to see.
Inventory
Should stores add book fair titles to their overall inventory? Or does that needlessly confuse in store inventory levels and stock availability?
E. Shaver uses the Anthology POS system which includes a book fair module. The store receives the books into inventory and then scans them into the book fair module which "checks them out" so they do not show in the store's regular inventory. They then sort the books by section (Middle Grade, Picture Books, etc.) and repack them to be delivered to the school.
Child's Play, on the other handdoes not receive the books into inventory until after the book fair. They also sort books by section prior to delivering them to the school.
Staffing:
Should you staff the fair yourself or let the book fair organizers be responsible for staffing?
E. Shaver sets up and staffs the book fairs they do. The store restocks the fair with inventory from the store as necessary and takes special orders for the kids on site. Special orders are delivered to the school as they arrive after the fair. Square is used to process sales at the book fair.
Unlike E. Shaver, Child's Play Bookstore delivers and picks up the stock but does not staff the fair. They also restock from their store inventory as they receive restock requests from the school. They use Square to process book fair sales.
Reconciling:
What do you do with leftover stock?
After the book fair is over, E. Shaver scans all of the books back into the Anthology book fair module, which then adjusts inventory based on what was returned to the shop. The store will then either hold onto the stock for other upcoming book fairs, move them into regular store inventory, or they will return the books they don't need. The store uses a storage unit to help manage the space needed to process the extra inventory.
Child's Play receives the product into inventory after it is returned to the store, whereupon they also decide whether to return the books or put them on the shelf in the store for regular sales.
Melissa Taylor, who co-moderated the session, noted the event was a success and generated animated discussion among the attendees;"I think book fairs are such a big project and everyone does them slightly differently that there is always something you can learn from another store."

Meet Más Libritos
Más Libritos Bookstore in Springdale, AR describes itself as a Latina-owned and intersectional feminist bookstore of new and used books that centers the stories of Black, Indigenous, and People of Color (BIPOC), and this is reflected within their book collection. The owner, Diana Dominguez, who used to work at a library, wants to establish connections inside the local community and both pay homage to and celebrate Latine culture through the bookstore. It’s a niche store, BIPOC focused, and their programming is all about connecting to the Latine community and culture.
In Diana’s own words: “This bookstore is dedicated to mi familia, en particular mi madre que siempre me ha animado y me inspira a diario con su fuerza y compasión. On heavy days, she would always say to me, "Tu puedes. Eres una campeona."
The store began as a pop-up in January and established a brick-and-mortar store in July nextdoor to a breakfast restaurant. Diana said it’s important to her to center Latine voices, especially with the book banning issues that Arkansas faces. She wants her bookstore to be a place where all are invited and represented.
As for the books that have had an impact on Diana’s life, she says, “In no particular order: House on Mango Street, The Combahee River Collective Statement, This Bridge Called My Back, Black Feminist Thought: Knowledge, Consciousness, and the Politics of Empowerment, and so many others!”
You can follow Más Libritos Bookstore on Instagram @maslibritosbookstore or on Facebook. Visit their website and shop online at https://mas-libritos-bookstore.square.site/.
I really want to hear all about the cool things your store is doing, so please fill out the Bookstore Profile Questionnaire and/or tag SIBA on social media and tell me all your awesome ideas, and I’ll use the information to feature you on our social media!
As always, if you have any questions or if you just want to say hello, you can contact me any time at candice@sibaweb.com.

Current Newsletter: We're with the Banned
Book Buzz Feature: Godkiller
"I remember being a furious child. Small and blonde, bookish and talkative, I hated how often I was “baby,” how often I was “cute.” I wanted to be loud, strong, and powerful. I wanted to fight my brothers and my cousins, strength to strength, arm to arm, bloody noses and bruises." --Hannah Kaner

Banned Books Week is October 1-7
Banned Books Week and the ABA have many resources available to help raise awareness about the danger and damage of book banning efforts currently underway. They include an updated the Banned Books Week Handbook with programming ideas, best practices for events, resources, and tips for handling censorship. The ABA has digital toolkits available, including banned books bingo, counter displays, and banned book merch. The National Coalition Against Censorship, in cooperation with the American Booksellers for Free Expression, has also launched The Kids' Right to Read Project to provide support, education, and direct advocacy to people facing book challenges or bans in schools. Hi SIBA friends!
In this update, I wanted to let you know that I have taken over as SIBA’s social media coordinator for SIBA and the Southern Bookseller Review. I will be posting videos each week of the most important things from the newsletter, things you need to know, store features, events, and more. I will also be doing video versions of both this membership update and the Ask Candice Anything column. Members are already finding the video posts helpful, so make sure you follow us on Instagram @siba_books and/or on Facebook to get the scoop directly from me. Also, if you have a question or would like to be featured on social media, please send me an email.
Outside of social media, we’re currently working on an official sunsetting process for when stores close, change ownership, etc. so we can better track those events. We’re also working on updating our resource database to give you access to the most up-to-date information. If you have something that you think other stores could benefit from, please share with us. I’m also working on cleaning up our database, compiling resources for you, and creating a Discord server where we can all talk to each other. I’m excited about all these projects, and we’re hoping to build a great online community.

September Indie-to-Indie Playlists: Back to School & Break Out Books
Help your community start off the new school year right with titles that will open minds, reveal new discoveries, and broaden our experience of the world around us. Publishers have created not one but TWO new playlists -- one specifically for those interested in learning new tricks (a Back to School playlist), and the other celebrating new voices in literature (a Breakouts & Debuts playlist). There's something for everyone on each of these lists to help round out your displays and make sure your customers can always find something new in your bookstore.

The Southern Independent Booksellers Alliance is pleased to welcome Krystle Dandridge of RVA Book Bar in Richmond, Virginia, and Bunnie Hilliard of Brave + Kind Bookshop in Decatur, Georgia to the SIBA Board. Both incoming board members will start their three-year terms on January 1, 2023. They replace Jamie Rogers Southern, Executive Director of Bookmarks in Winston-Salem, and Jamie Fiocco of Flyleaf Books. As the outgoing Board President, Jamie Southern will remain on the board as a non-voting member in an advisory capacity.
Dandridge and Hilliard join the SIBA Board at an important time when the organization is evolving to better meet the needs of its members in the current economy and political climate. Among the projects the SIBA Board has been working on are updating SIBA's bylaws to reflect contemporary realities faced by SIBA member stores, refining the definition of a SIBA "Core Member Bookstore" to recognize the growing diversity of business models in the SIBA region, and supporting innovative programs launched by SIBA such as the joint conference and programming with NAIBA, its sister organization to the north, under the New Voices New Rooms Partnership.
SIBA booksellers can meet with their current board members at the SIBA Annual Meeting to be held on zoom this fall (date to be announced) or at the SIBA Board Office Hours, scheduled for November 9 at 7:00 PM. Check the SIBA Event Calendar for more details.
Krystle Dandridge
Krystle Dandridge is a Jersey native, who has called Richmond her home for the last decade. She is a licensed therapist by training and trade, but recently embarked on a new entrepreneurial endeavor by opening Richmond’s only Black-owned, woman-owned bookstore during Black History Month 2022.
Bunnie Hilliard
Bunnie Hilliard, Owner of Brave + Kind Bookshop, in Decatur (Atlanta) Georgia. Black-owned and woman run, established 2018. Brave + Kind Bookshop's mission is aimed at prioritizing an intentional collection of diverse and inclusive stories for children. And a few grown up books to help us all do better as human beings.

The Book Industry Charitable Foundation (Binc) has announced the winners of their two scholarships for Bookseller Development; the Macmillan Booksellers Professional Development Scholarship, and the Keating Memorial Scholarship.
Jordan April of Flyleaf Books is the SIBA recipient of the Macmillan Booksellers Professional Development Scholarship, which provides financial assistance to booksellers from underrepresented groups to attend their region's annual trade
show. April attended SIBA's annual conference at New Voices New Rooms in Arlington, Virginia, earlier this month.
Nyawira Nyota of Page 158 Books was the SIBA recipient of the Keating Scholarship, created in memory of publishing sales rep George Keating to provide financial assistance to booksellers in the SIBA, NAIBA, and NEIBA territories to attend
their region's annual conference. Nyota also was able to attend the New Voices New Rooms conference in August.
“Binc is honored to help book people expand their knowledge and grow in their roles,” said Binc Executive Director Pam French. Binc has committed to supporting bookseller development as central to its mission to strengthen the bookselling community.
On September 1st applications will open for the Carla Gray Memorial Scholarship for Emerging Bookseller-Activists. This awards the winning bookseller travel and hotel for attendance to Winter Institute, travel and hotel for attendance
to their regional trade show, and a stipend to fund a community outreach project.
