New Voices New Rooms began in 2020 as an innovative virtual programming platform for an industry adapting to the realities of operating during a pandemic. The platform was refined in 2021, and now in 2022 has become not simply a "conference" but a permanent and ongoing partnership and community dedicated to fostering connections and relationships between publishers and NAIBA and SIBA bookstores.
The NVNR Calendar currently features five regular events:
March: Publicity Speed Dating
Early in the season, Booksellers pitch their stores to publishers and publicists, making the case for their inclusion in publicity event grids and marketing plans. Participating bookstores receive a contact list of all the publicists and publishers present. Contact Eileen Dengler if your store participated and you need a copy of the list.
May: NVNR May
A two-day event focused on bookseller and author/publisher connections at a time when bookstores are making most of their holiday buying decisions. The program features author panel programs, keynote presentations, and breakout rooms where authors and small groups of booksellers will enjoy get-to-know-you talks, and multiple "Pick of the List" Rep presentations and Editors’ Buzz sessions.
August: NVNR August
A three-day event that features a week of education, bookseller retreats, author presentations, new and upcoming titles, and publisher studios, similar to NVNR from the past two years. There will be an added focus on networking and building industry connections among bookselling colleagues and publishers.
October: The VIndies
Launched in 2021, the VIndies is a celebration of bookstore creativity. A "Bookstore Oscars" that highlights the fun and independent spirit of bookstore videos.
Late Fall: New Owners Retreat
A multi-day intensive networking and education workshop specifically designed for new bookstore owners. The schedule is tailored to current store needs and includes moderated discussions and networking sessions around topics such as staffing, finance, store operations, and inventory management.
April - September: Bookstore Row & The Publisher/Vendor Studio Gallery
The online directories of bookstores, publishes and vendors opens to NVNR attendees on April 1st and stays open until September 30. Bookstores showcase their store and staff, with easily-shared links to their store listing. Publishers provide curated Edelweiss collections, video links to rep picks and editor buzz presentation, links to order specials, new account information and sales rep contact info. Bookstore Row and the Studio Gallery are only open to the NVNR community.

You can't manage what you don't measure. Do the work.
B Lab Global creates standards, policies, tools, and programs that shift the behavior, culture, and structural underpinnings of capitalism. They certify businesses whose practices are in line with their goal of creating a more fair and inclusive economy. Some of the companies with B Corps certification include Ben & Jerry's, Patagonia, Sundial Brands (Shea Moisture), and Dr. Bronner's.
Last year they compiled a collection of Anti-Racist practices and strategies adopted by some of the businesses who have achieved certification. The overall guiding principle? "You can't manage what you don't measure, do the work on racial justice."
The document shares concrete measures B Corps certified companies have taken or committed to implementing. Some are public-facing, like making sizable donations to the NAACP legal defense fund, and some are internal and in-house, like keeping an updated library or anti-racist resources for employees, implementing paid volunteer time to be used towards Black=founded charities or social justice work, and even protest marches.
All have committed to continuing education and training within their own companies, whether it is in the form of formal DEI training, or something as simple as an on going staff book club. Read more here:

 River of Ashes, Book 1
Alexandrea Weis & Lucas Astor
On Sale 8.2.2022
9781645480983 | $17.95
Thrillers/Psychological, Coming of Age, Ghost, Southern
“Alexandrea Weis’s novels are destined to stand along with authors such as Stephen King, Gillian Flynn, Joyce Carol Oates, and Jeffery Deaver.” ~The Strand Magazine
Along the Bogue Falaya River, sits the abandoned St. Francis Seminary. Teens of St. Benedict gather here on Fridays. The rest of the week belongs to school and family—but weekends belong to the river. And the river belongs to Beau Devereaux. The only child of a powerful family, Beau can do no wrong. The handsome “prince” of St. Benedict is the ultimate catch. He is also a psychopath.
A dirty family secret buried for years, Beau’s evil grows unchecked, and in the shadows of the haunted abbey, he commits unspeakable acts. Senior year, Beau sets his sights on his girlfriend’s sister, Leslie, who hates him. Everything he wants but cannot have, she will be his ultimate prize. As the victim toll mounts, it becomes clear that someone must stop Beau Devereaux. And that someone will pay with their life.
“A psychological portrait akin to Lord of the Flies.” ~Midwest Book Review
Author Alexandrea Weis, RN-CS, PhD, has taught at universities, worked with victims of sexual assault and mental illness, and is a wildlife rehabber. She resides in New Orleans and is a member of HWA and ITW.
Lucas Astor is an author/poet who lives outside Nashville, TN.

Send Her Back and other stories
by Munashe Kaseke
Mukana Press, July 2022
ISBN13: 9780578353128, $17.95,
Multicultural fiction/Short story collection
In Send Her Back and other stories, Munashe Kaseke offers an awfully intimate, fresh telling of the immigrant experience of black women in the United States. Equally awash with the joys of exploring a new world as well as a myriad of challenges, her complicated, and often tangled, female Zimbabwean protagonists navigate issues of identity, microaggressions, and sexism in vibrant, indelible settings. Yet again, these are not only stories of navigating an at times tense US political climate, they are also marked by characters who rise to the top of their professional fields, seize the American dream, and travel the world in glee. Kaseke peels back on the inner wranglings of characters caught between two worlds, be it by stories of dating outside one’s culture and race or failing to assimilate upon returning home after spending time abroad.
Email: partnerships@mukanapess.com to request ARC copies. 100 free copies available.

Bookseller sign ups for New Voices New Rooms May & August have been pouring in since registration opened last week. Stores are especially excited about the addition of the May event, with its focus on new and forthcoming books for the summer and fall season.
Although it is only a two-day event, the NVNR May schedule will have more time devoted to the "Pick of the Lists" rep presentations and the Editors' Buzz sessions that have been one of the most popular parts of the NVNR program. NVNR May will also feature the signature Readers of the Last ARC Galley Room, as well as Bookstore Row and the Studio Gallery -- the latter with a focus on providing resources and materials for the books presented at the event.
NVNR May is timed to give booksellers the information they need to make their third- and fourth-quarter purchasing decisions.

Spotlighting Books and Crannies Bookstore in Martinsville, Virginia.
“My alma mater was books, a good library…. I could spend the rest of my life reading, just satisfying my curiosity.”— Malcolm X
SIBA promotes six new books every month to readers, the customers of our member stores, in our Southern Bookseller Review (SBR) Bookshelf promotion. These titles appear at the top of our weekly SBR newsletter. We also feature them on our SBR Facebook page, with buy links promoted to our 15,000 Facebook friends, and on our Instagram and Twitter accounts. A different member store is featured with the titles on every new shelf.
For publishers looking to promote their new titles out to readers across the South, the SBR Bookshelf is our greatest value because of high visibility and engagement across multiple platforms. Contact us for more information or to get your titles on “The Shelf” in coming months.
