Binc: The Southern Bookselling Community Steps Up!

Binc

SIBA raised over $3000 for the Book Industry Charitable Foundation at the SIBA Discovery Show last week. Binc is a charitable foundation that provides assistance to bookstore employees who have a demonstrated financial need arising from severe hardship and/or emergency circumstances. The generosity of show attendees was especially in evidence as Hurricane Florence made landfall on the North Carolina coast, threatening friends and colleagues.

"SIBA and her team raised a total of $3,039," said Kathy Bartson of Binc, "thus helping at least one bookseller and family but most likely two booksellers!"

The "Heads or Tails" Binc fundraiser has become an established event at the show. A game in which participants buy flashing pins for a chance to win a $500 cash prize, the fundraiser culminates in a fun event on the show floor where everyone who has bought a pin stands, pins blinking, and when the coin is flipped, each person publicly indicates their guess by placing their hands on their “head” (head) or “tail” (backside). Each flip eliminates those who guessed wrong, and they turn off their pin; More pins mean more chances to play and the last person standing wins.

SIBA and Binc sold the pins for $20 each, or 2 for $35. Publishers stepped in to play on behalf of their authors and show presenters who couldn't stay for the event but wanted to support Binc and the many booksellers threatened by the storm.

The winner of the #SIBA18 Heads or Tails contest was from The Muse Bookshop in Deland Florida.

Donations to Binc can be made here

https://secure.donationpay.org/bincfoundation/

If you are a bookseller in need, you can request assistance here:

https://www.bincfoundation.org/request-assistance/

Booksellers can also email to help@bincfoundation.org or call 866-733-9064.

In the words of Binc Executive Director Pam French "We are ready to assist."

*A personal note from Nicki: I sometimes think people don't take the phrase "we are ready to assist" seriously or literally, but I am here to tell you that when Binc says it, they absolutely mean it. It was no secret at this year's SIBA show that I was feeling worried and a little frantic. Hurricane Florence made landfall...well, right in my front yard, frankly. I live just north of Wilmington, NC, on the coast. Needless to say, I was distracted the entire week, unable to get any news about friends or loved ones, not to mention my friend who housesits for me and takes care of my dogs and cats. (Everyone is fine, by the way, as is my house). The day the hurricane hit, the Binc people emailed me, asking if I needed help and letting SIBA know they were ready to help any bookseller in harm's way. Pam and Kathy were both at the show and checked in with me periodically. And as I made my way home (as of this writing I am still en route, all the roads to Wilmington are closed), Binc called me on the phone just to check in and make sure I knew help was available. In fact, one of the most rewarding things I have done post-show was to help Binc compile a list of our member stores that may have been affected and have staff in need. They are that committed to their mission.

Binc is good people, folks. Give if you can. And please, please, ask for help if you need it.

SIBA announces Rick Bragg as the 2019 Conroy Legacy Award Recipient!

Posted By Nicki Leone, Thursday, September 13, 2018
Updated: Tuesday, September 11, 2018

Rick Bragg

Rick Bragg, the Pulitzer Prize-winning writer, journalist, and author of two bestselling memoirs and numerous other books, has been selected as the 2019 Conroy Legacy Award Recipient. Created in honor of the example set by the beloved Southern author Pat Conroy, the Conroy Legacy Award recognizes writers who have achieved a lasting impact on their literary community, demonstrated support for independent bookstores, both in their own communities and in general, written work that focuses significantly on their home place, and supported other writers, especially new and emerging writers. Serendipitously, Rick Bragg is a contributor to Our Prince of Scribes: Writers Remember Pat Conroy edited by by Nicole Seitz and Jonathan Haupt, published by University of Georgia Press and releasing this September.

When informed of the award, Rick Bragg shared, “I heard Pat Conroy read his work aloud and it will almost make you abandon this craft for good and take up something like brick laying. The elegance and beauty of it always, across decades, made me think ‘Oh, so this is what it is supposed to sound like, be, linger in the mind.’ The fact he once said good things about my own work made me walk on air. I mean it, my step was lighter somehow. To be presented his award by people who have been with me since the beginning of my writing life, in his name, is as fine a thing as I can ever expect.”

Suzanne Lucey of Page 158 Books in Wake Forest, NC praised this year’s award winner, “Rick Bragg is the whole package. Intelligent, to the point, hilarious and beyond generous with his time and storytelling. A true man's man and momma's boy who makes us cry with laughter. He embraces his Southern Roots and contributes to the overall reason we all love the South.”

SIBA will make a donation to the Pat Conroy Literary Center and to the Margaret Bragg Scholarship for first generation college students at Jacksonville State University in Jacksonville, Alabama in the name of Rick Bragg.

On the Exhibits Stage at #SIBA18: The Rise of Alt Science Fiction & Fantasy

Posted By Linda-Marie Barrett, Monday, September 3, 2018

On the Exhibits Stage at #SIBA18: The Rise of Alt Science Fiction & Fantasy

SFF is more than a one-trick unicorn: we are seeing a smart evolution in one of literature's most popular sub-orbital genres. Even if you don't read science fiction, it's hard to ignore the critical attention that the new crop of alt SFF is generating. Whether it's a foray into the mildly dystopic future, and exploration of Afrofuturism, a re-imagined world under some of the harshest authoritarian principals at work on Earth today, SF is edging so much closer to science faction. Alt SFF is worth paying attention to- so as we navigate an increasingly dystopic present day, how can your store foster informed escapism by recommending hottest new titles in the SFF scene, cultivating sales to lit lovers and genre readers alike? Don't miss this panel discussion on Friday (9/14) on the Exhibits Stage in the Inverness Ballroom from 11am-noon.

Moderator: Caroline Perny, (Senior Publicist at HarperVoyager)
Nicky Drayden (Author of TEMPER and THE PREY OF GODS)
Ann Leckie (Author of THE RAVEN TOWER and ANCILLARY JUSTICE)
Lucia Drinkwalter (Bookseller at Flyleaf Books)
Beth Seufer Buss (Community Outreach and Bookstore Manager at Bookmarks)
Jessica Osborne (Bookseller at E. Shaver)

Friday Night at the Movies: Join Us for a Screening of The Bookshop!

Posted By Linda-Marie Barrett, Monday, September 3, 2018

Friday Night at the Movies: Join Us for a Screening of The Bookshop!

Join your bookloving cohorts at #SIBA18 on Friday night and watch this late-night (9pm) screening of "The Bookshop"! You're welcome to wear your pjs, if that's your jam, and watch a movie that celebrates the importance of booksellers. In 1959 England, free-spirited widow Florence Green (Emily Mortimer) risks everything to open a bookshop in a conservative East Anglian coastal town. While bringing about a surprising cultural awakening through works by Ray Bradbury and Vladimir Nabokov, she earns the polite but ruthless opposition of a local grand dame (Patricia Clarkson) and the support and affection of a reclusive book loving widower (Bill Nighy). As Florence's obstacles amass and bear suspicious signs of a local power struggle, she is forced to ask: is there a place for a bookshop in a town that may not want one? Based on Penelope Fitzgerald's acclaimed novel and directed by Isabel Coixet (Learning to Drive), The Bookshop is an elegant yet incisive rendering of personal resolve, tested in the battle for the soul of a community. Watch the Official Trailer HERE!

#SIBA18 Kick-off Lunch presents three exciting voices in literature for young adults and children.

Posted By Linda-Marie Barrett, Friday, August 31, 2018

The #SIBA18 Kick-off Lunch Presents Three Exciting Voices in Literature for Young Adults and Children (Plus One Fabulous Chef)!

#SIBA18's Kick-Off Lunch on Thursday (9/13) at noon presents three exciting voices in literature for young adults and children, plus one amazing chef from North Carolina. Make time in your busy day to be inspired and eat well!

In his graphic-novel memoir, Hey, Kiddo, Jarrett Krosoczka describes growing up in a family grappling with addiction, and finding the art that helps him survive. It’s receiving rave reviews from booksellers, authors, and book reviewers. His Ted Talk “How a Boy Became an Artist” has been viewed almost a million times.

Geanna Culbertson is the author of the YA Crisanta Knight Series. “In an era of strong, original heroines like Katniss Everdeen, Tris Prior, and Clary Fray, who aren’t afraid to take on the world and shake things up, comes the story of Crisanta Knight—a girl ready and willing to tear the traditional fairytale realm a new one in favor of carving out her own destiny.” SIBA booksellers were treated to Geanna’s inspiring TED-style talk at this year’s EUREKAsiba. She’s a fabulous presenter you don’t want to miss.

William Joyce is a celebrated, award-winning author, illustrator, and filmmaker whose works include The Fantastic Flying Books of Mr. Morris Lessmore, which was made into an animated short film and won an Academy Award in 2012. His newest book, Jack Frost, is the third picture book in The Guardians of Childhood series for young readers.

Lunch features a recipe from Jennifer Brule’s The New Vegetarian South: 105 Inspired Dishes for Everyone. In her newest book, chef Jennifer Brule brings southern-style food together with plant-based approaches to eating. Her down-to-earth style and 105 recipes will immediately appeal to vegetarians, vegans, and meat-eaters alike.

Brule is the executive chef and owner of the flexitarian restaurant Davidson Ice House, in Davidson, North Carolina.

Books L(a)unch from Flatiron with Amy Einhorn, Executive Vice President & Publisher, Flatiron Books

Amy Einhorn has been in publishing for over 25 years since starting at Farrar, Straus and Giroux. Before joining Flatiron, she headed her eponymous imprint, Amy Einhorn Books, at Penguin. Some of her bestselling fiction titles include the #1 New York Times bestsellers The Help by Kathryn Stockett and Big Little Lies by Liane Moriarty, as well as bestsellers such as The Weird Sisters by Eleanor Brown, The Postmistress by Sarah Blake, and Free Food for Millionaires by National Book Award Nominee Min Jin Lee. Her nonfiction bestsellers include Amy Sedaris’s I Like You, Jenny Lawson’s #1 New York Times bestsellers Let’s Pretend This Never Happened and Furiously Happy, and former  FBI Director James Comey’s book on leadership, A Higher Loyalty.

Amy Einhorn will introduce Flatiron writers Sarah Blake, Guest Book, Chandler Baker, The Whisper Network, Yangsze Choo, The Night Tiger, and Gita Trelease, Enchantee.  It’s always so insightful to hear an editor present her writers, as they provide a glimpse into the author/editor relationship and the ways a publishing house curates their titles. Einhorn's authors represent debut and bestselling authors of different genres, too. A lunch not to be missed!

This event takes place at #SIBA18 on Friday (9/14) at 1pm. Registered but haven’t purchased your meal ticket yet? No problem! Email Nicki@sibaweb.com.

Make a Bookseller's Holiday and nominate them for a James Patterson Holiday Bonus!

Posted By Linda-Marie Barrett, Thursday, August 30, 2018

Make a Bookseller's Holiday and Nominate Them for a James Patterson Holiday Bonus!

Author James Patterson’s Holiday Bookstore Bonus Program has pledged a contribution of $250,000 to provide independent bookstore employees with some extra cash around the winter holidays.

Patterson is partnering with the American Booksellers Association for the fifth time to distribute the bonuses, to be granted in amounts of $750 to $1,500 to individual booksellers. The process to submit nominations is open through September 30, and anyone can nominate. All past recipients of Patterson grants are eligible for this year's bonus, and booksellers can self-nominate. The grant application asks one question: “Why does this bookseller deserve a holiday bonus?” After reviewing the answers, Patterson will select the winners from bookstores across the country. Here's a link to the grant application. Good luck to all nominated booksellers!

In 2017, Patterson donated a record $350,000 to bookstore employees; in 2016, $250,000 to 149 independent bookstore employees across the country; and in 2015, $250,000 to 87 recipients. In 2014, he awarded $1 million in grants to 178 independent bookstores. Over the past decade, Patterson has also given away more than a million books to students all over the United States and visited hundreds of schools to advocate for youth literacy.

As Natural Disasters Hit Home, We Remind Booksellers that Binc has their Back!

Kit Mundus Steinaway, Programs Manager at the Book Industry Charitable Foundation, reached out to booksellers recently with the message, "As Hurricane Lane races toward Hawaii and the wildfires continue to burn in the western states, I wanted to reach out with a reminder. If you hear of a bookseller who has been impacted by any disaster, please encourage them to contact Binc. We can help with relocation, loss of property or loss of household income. We want to do anything we can to help booksellers in the path of nature's fury.  If you are a bookseller impacted by a disaster contact Binc for financial assistance 866-733-9064 or help@bincfoundation.org."

Don't Miss One of the Highlights of #SIBA18: Parapalooza!

Posted By Linda-Marie Barrett, Tuesday, August 28, 2018

Don't Miss One of the Highlights of #SIBA18: Parapalooza!

Parapalooza happens on Friday, September 14 at 5:45pm Authors read with meaning, feeling, and enthusiasm a single hand-picked paragraph from their book. Every year, booksellers have to elbow their way in (kindly, but assertively) to be part of an hour of big laughs, and hear from a sampling of authors representing various genres for adults and children. And, oh, what a great selection of authors coming your way this year!  One of the stars, and a first-time presenter at SIBA, will be Tena Clark, author of Southern Discomfort, whom Maria Shriver calls, "a pioneering force of nature." Clark has written award-winning songs, contributed to the soundtracks of many movies, including "Hope Floats," and "My Best Friend's Wedding," and television shows including "Desperate Housewives." Clark is also a civil rights activist and crusader for women's rights.

We have a new MC this year, Helen Ellis, author of the Southern Lady Code. Helen Ellis has a mantra: “If you don’t have something nice to say, say something not-so-nice in a nice way.” What will that mean for the authors in attendance and booksellers in the audience? Time will tell, but I'm sure this "fiercely funny" MC will keep everyone on their toes.

And what's more, National Geographic is contributing cold beer for attendees. The authors of The National Geographic Atlas of Beer, Nancy Hoalst-Pullen and Mark Patterson are part of the line-up. Seriously, amazing authors, an hilarious MC, and cold beer? Does it get any better? See you at Parapalooza!

An Interview with the Owners of Book No Further in Roanoke, VA

Posted By Linda-Marie Barrett, Tuesday, August 28, 2018

An Interview with the Owners of Book No Further in Roanoke, VA

Name: Doloris Vest and Craig Coker, owners

Store and Location: Book No Further, 16 Church Ave, SW, Roanoke, VA 24011

Number of years as a bookseller: Almost one as an owner and a couple of holiday seasons in the past.

Best part about being a bookseller: Talking books and trying to get the right book in the right hand.

What book(s) are you reading?: Your Heart is a Muscle the Size of Fist by Sunil Yapa (the Roanoke Valley Reads pick) Chesapeake Requiem by Earl Swift.

Favorite handsell of 2018: Varina by Charles Frazier about Varina Davis, wife of confederate president Jefferson Davis. I pair it with Winnie Davis by Heath Lee, a wonderful biography of Varina and Jefferson’s youngest daughter covering the same time.

Best thing you did this year at your store: Got it open! ;-) Also, I am so glad we have been able to bring attention to the literary community that exists here and bring readers and writers together. Our most successful event was a talk with Liza Mundy, a Roanoke native, on her book Code Girls about women who broke German and Japanese codes in WWII. We’re expecting 100-plus for our event on September 5 with another Roanoker and Beth Macy, author of New York Times Bestseller Dopesick.

Social Media Stats: Our likes are essentially even with the used and chain bookstores in the area who have been open more than 20 years. One of our most popular social posts was of a visit by the Easter Bunny.

What are some ways you work with your community? Major emphasis in the store on local writers. We’re blessed with a large number of nationally published authors living in Western Virginia. Beth Macy, David Baldacci, Sharyn McCrumb, Diane Fanning, Leah Weiss and others. In our first 10 months we hosted 18 author talks for more than 30 authors, a number of special events including our Grand Opening, Small Business Saturday, Independent Bookstore Day as well as community events like MuggleFest, Spring Festival, Riot Rooster Makers Festival, Dickens of Christmas and others. We work with a lot of non-profits to offer books at their events where they otherwise wouldn’t have the resources, and generally donate some of the proceeds back to the organization, such as the Harrison Museum of African American History. My favorite activity is working with Blue Ridge Literacy. We give each new reader or ESL program completer a book of their choice.

Do you have any community partners you work with regularly? Book City Roanoke, which supports all thing literary in Western Virginia; We work closely with Downtown Roanoke Inc. to promote downtown retail of all kinds.

Do you have passions that carry over into your bookselling life? The most unusual thing is helping customers learn to knit or crochet. If a customer mentions trying to learn and having difficulty, I invite them to the store when it’s quiet and help them through the difficult parts.

Top priority for 2018: Getting established in the store itself, learning customer preferences, and building community awareness that there is an indie store in town.

Favorite SIBA programming benefit: Talking to all the booksellers and exchanging ideas. I’ve made great connections and have people I can call on for nearly any subject. Secondly, would be the webinars on a variety of topics. As the store’s only staff person I don’t always get to listen in, so I love that they are recorded and archived.

SIBA Installs Two New Directors to the Board of Directors at #SIBA18

SIBA is pleased to announce the addition of two new board members to the SIBA Board whose terms begin in 2019: Janet Geddis of Avid Bookshop in Athens, GA, and Jamie Rogers Southern of Bookmarks in Winston-Salem, NC. Janet and Jamie will attend the #SIBA18 Discovery Show, where they will be welcomed to the board at the SIBA Annual Meeting + Town Hall on Friday, Sept 14 at 9am. Join us in welcoming Janet and Jamie! Congratulations also to Star Lowe of Star Line Books for winning a free hotel stay for one evening in our voter participation raffle.

Janet Geddis is the founder and owner of Avid Bookshop, an award-winning business with two locations in Athens, GA. Janet holds a BA in English & American Literature from NYU and an M.Ed. in Educational Psychology from UGA's College of Education. Janet is a professionnal writer and accomplished speaker; her most notable public speaking engagements to date were in spring 2018, when she first presented to 1500+ audience members at a TEDx conference and then delivered a well-received UGA English Department keynote speech about the many benefits of being a lifelong reader. Known for her inventiveness (she was the first bookstore owner to use crowdfunding to gather some startup funds in 2010!) and positivity, Janet volunteers in Athens and in the book world whenever possible. Her creative entrepreneurism and open leadership style have garnered her award nominations and significant press coverage, including a feature in Grace Bonney’s first issue of Good Company magazine. In 2016, Janet was one of 40 publishing industry professionals to be chosen for Publishers Weekly’s Star Watch list.

Jamie Rogers Southern is the Operations Director at Bookmarks. Bookmarks is a literary nonprofit organization based in Winston-Salem, North Carolina. It began as the largest annual book festival in the Carolinas, and an Authors in Schools program reaching 7000+ students of all ages annually, and several other book and author events throughout the year. In 2017 the organization completed a successful capital campaign and opened a bookstore and permanent event space in downtown Winston-Salem. Before Bookmarks Jamie worked at Alabama Booksmith in Homewood, AL, and for the American Booksellers Association. She is married to Ed Southern, Executive Director of the North Carolina Writers Network. She's also a University of Alabama football fan. Roll Tide!

Janet Geddis and Jamie Rogers Southern join board members Kimberly Daniels Taws, Kelly Justice, and Shane Gottwals. Stepping down are Doug Robinson (current Board President) of Eagle Eye Books in Atlanta, GA and Stephanie Crowe of Page & Palette in Fairhope, AL. SIBA appreciates their hard work and will be offering two frontline scholarships to #SIBA19 in their names. Thank them for their service when you see then in Tampa!
