An Interview with Sally Bradshaw, Owner of Midtown Reader in Tallahassee, Florida
Store and location: Midtown Reader, Tallahassee, Florida
Number of years as a bookseller: Just under two years!
Best part about being a bookseller?: The remarkably interesting people that come into our store.
What book(s) are you reading?: I’m reading There There by Tommy Orange. It’s sad and beautiful. I’ve also binge-read Ruth Ware’s four mysteries this summer. And now I’m also reading an ARC of November Road by Lou Berney, and really enjoying it.
Favorite handsell of 2018: Oh gosh, I’m still selling Trevor Noah’s book. I can’t stop talking about it. But for 2018 I guess I’ve sold a lot of Killers of the Flower Moon by David Grann. It’s just a stunning story that so few people know. And it reads like fiction.
Best thing you did this year at your store: We hosted James Patterson in February, and we expanded to an upstairs space and have partnered with a local cupcakery to provide cupcakes and coffee! Yum!
Social Media Stats (FB likes, Twitter followers, etc): 2964 FB likes/3015 follows; 841 followers on twitter/540 likes; 1295 followers on Instagram
What are some ways you work with your community? We recently partnered with the Holocaust Education Research Council to host their quarterly book club and to highlight books in our store that help teach the Holocaust; we donate books to the Children’s Home Society “Giving Library” over the holidays – we put up a book tree, match every book purchased then deliver to CHS; we’re involved in multiple education/literacy charities, volunteering for United Way’s Read United in schools; and our Authors in Schools program has brought several terrific middle grade and lower school authors to Tallahassee over the past year including Cassie Beasley and Katherine Applegate. We also partner with Word of South literary and music festival in Tallahassee each spring. And we’ve worked with the Tallahassee Senior Center and Westminster Oaks retirement community to bring authors to their members as well. And, finally, we host an author series with the Tallahassee Democrat newspaper.
Do you have any community partners you work with regularly? See above.
Do you have passions that carry over into your bookselling life? I have bookselling passions that carry over into my private life . I think my husband, children, and friends are a little tired of how often I recommend good reads to them! I do feel really strongly about connecting people and advocating for civil discourse. We’ve tried hard to create a space where people who are very different and may have different interests and beliefs can find common ground based on a love of reading and learning.
Top priority for 2018: Continuing to expand our customer base and visibility as a new bookstore.
Favorite SIBA programming benefit: SIBA fall Discovery show– it’s AMAZING. The programs and information are so informative– especially for new booksellers. The staff is terrific, and the interaction with other booksellers so helpful.

An Interview with Doni Kay, Sales Representative for Penguin Young Readers
Name: Doni Kay
Employer: Penguin Young Readers
States in your territory: DC, VA, NC, SC, GA, FL
Number of years as a rep:16
Best part about being a rep: Visiting bookstores and meeting with my buyers.
What were you doing before you became a rep? I was the children’s buyer for Books & Books in Coral Gables. I also ran the bookfair operation and managed the kid’s room with Michelle Krinzman. Before that, I was a flight attendant with Air Florida back in the late 70’s!
What's the coolest thing/a great idea you've seen at one of your stores? I love the Goodnight, Moon room at Little Shop of Stories in Decatur, Georgia. It’s magical!
Do you see Edelweiss reviews from booksellers? Yes, I do. All the time. I encourage my buyers to make sure they praise the galleys they love in Edelweiss. Knowing that once a buyer has gone through the catalog and marked their order that they may not ever go back in, I tell them I will sit right there while they write a review, even if it is in the middle of our sales call.
Do you follow any stores especially closely on social media? What are they doing right? I follow many of my accounts on social media. In the last couple of years I have seen so many of them step up their game on social media, specifically Instagram. Many have assigned a specific employee to manage their social media accounts, which I think is a great idea. Also, at Penguin Young Readers, we make sure to send out Social Media ready assets that make it super easy for our accounts to post a picture or post a contest or pre-order campaign, without them needing to put it all together in their very limited amount of time. We would rather they are hand selling in the store, rather than trying to figure out how to post something. I am really impressed with a few of my newer stores, that have jumped right into social media.
What can a bookseller do to make a sales call more effective? I always hope that my buyers have gone through my Edelweiss mark up ahead of time and marked up their initial order, so that we can spend our time wisely…….fine tuning the order and making sure they have noticed some of the mark up notes that I have added, such as where the author lives or possibly something local that we can use as a selling tool.
Most memorable thing that’s happened during a sales call?
I can’t think of one most memorable thing, but probably my favorite thing is when my buyers gets called away for a few minutes and I get to be a bookstore staff member again…….doing what I love best……hand selling!
What’s one thing you wish bookstores would do, or do more often? I love feedback. I tell all of my buyers to write me a quick email or text me or call me and let me know any little thing that is happening in their store or with their customers, so that I can stay on top of trends in the marketplace. If a new employee is madly in love with one of my books and is hand selling it like crazy, I want to know, so that I can make sure to send galleys specifically to that staff member and be better able to target my mailings.
Favorite book you’re currently promoting: Picture book: Adrian Simcox Does NOT Have a Horse, (on sale in August 2018), Jackie Woodson’s new books……The Day You Begin and Harbor Me and Sheila Turnage’s finale to the Mo & Dale Mysteries which began with Three Times Lucky……The Law of Finders Keepers. Sooooo good!
What do you enjoy most about the SIBA Discovery Show? Seeing all my fellow reps and finding out what books they are excited about. Catching up with my customers and getting to know new-comers to the bookselling world. I really enjoy getting a chance to talk to some of the owners and buyers at some of the smaller accounts in my territory that I won’t necessarily see while on the road. It is a great way to build relationships and to personally show them the exciting books we have coming up!

Geek Out at the #SIBA18 Discovery Show! Sign up for an Escape Room Experience! After taking off in Asia, Western Europe, and the West Coast, escape rooms are popping up across the country. Will Shortz, the crossword puzzle editor for The New York Times, says it makes sense that escape experiences have become the puzzling trend of the moment. "If you were a brainy person 20 or 30 years ago, it was looked down upon. Nowadays, nerds have some of the biggest incomes in the U.S. and want to get together to geek out." Now you have an opportunity to geek out at #SIBA18!
Escape rooms are real-life team-based puzzle games, where you are locked in a room and have to solve puzzles together to get out. Once your team solves the mystery or reaches the end of the time limit, you're "set free.” Escape rooms aren’t just problem-solving exercises. They’re fun and engaging, and encourage working together to crack codes, solve puzzles and follow clues. Studies have found that those who play games are better learners. Think what this could do for your team! Want to sign up your team for an hour? Or get on the schedule to be part of a team? Contact wanda@sibaweb.com and get ready for some fun!

Applications open for the Carla Gray Memorial Scholarship for Emerging Bookseller-Activists Applications are now open for the Carla Gray Memorial Scholarship for Emerging Bookseller-Activists.
Would you like to attend Winter Institute, your regional trade show in 2019, and receive funding to create a program at your store that impacts your community in a positive way?
Then you should consider applying for this first-ever year-long scholarship provided by the Binc Foundation and the Friends of Carla Gray.
Carla Gray believed that books could change people and that people change the world. This memorial scholarship in her honor connects on both fronts, at the intersection of books and activism. Supporting emerging booksellers and their efforts to make a difference in one's community were essential to Carla. The community outreach project can be anything from providing books to underserved children or bringing a special speaker to your store, the sky is the limit. We want you to think outside the box and hopefully, your project could be shared with other stores.
You are eligible to apply if you:
- Have at least one year but fewer than 5 years of bookselling experience.
- Work part-time or full-time at a bookstore in good standing with the ABA and your regional association.
- Are willing and able to commit one year to complete the scholarship and you intend to remain employed as a bookseller through the implementation of your project.
- Your store owner agrees to partner with you on your community outreach project.

Driving Eureka! Problem Solving with Data Driven Methods and the Innovation Engineering System
by Wanda Jewell
Doug Hall is fascinating. I remember when he came out with Jump Start Your Brain I was so impressed with his energy and mindset. I was given the opportunity back then to visit his Eureka! Ranch and many times have looked back on that missed opportunity with regret. When I saw that he was going to be at Winter Institute in Memphis, TN, and that Richard Hunt of AdventureKeen was his publisher, I was determined to secure that opportunity again. I didn't know then that Doug Hall is a Robin Hood of sorts. He works with the largest corporations to provide the funds to give back to the smaller companies, like indie bookstores.
Fast forward, Doug Hall invites all of the Regional Boards and Staffs to Eureka Ranch for two and a half days. Booksellers are calling me to find out - What is he selling? What's the deal? Why is he doing this? - and this is why - Doug Hall's mission is to "change the world through systems that enable innovation by everyone, everywhere, every day." And I'm hear to tell you two things: 1. He is well on his way. 2. You want to be part of this.
Doug Hall is an inventor, researcher, and author. He’s a chemical engineer by education who rose to the rank of Master Marketing Inventor at Procter & Gamble. At P&G, using the principles that would become Innovation Engineering, his team of three invented and shipped a record nine innovations in just twelve months. He’s been named one of America’s top innovation experts by A&E Top 10, Inc. Magazine, The Wall Street Journal, DATELINE NBC, CNBC, CIO Magazine, and the CBC.
Innovation Engineering is a new field of academic study and leadership science focused on System Driven Innovation. It applies Dr. Deming’s System of Profound Knowledge, made famous in manufacturing during the 1980s, to strategy, innovation, and how we work together. It’s taught as an undergraduate minor and graduate certificate on college campuses and through off-campus executive education programs that include Innovation Engineering Black Belt (mastery), Silver Belt (leadership), and Blue Belt (innovators).
I'm so excited and grateful that Doug has agreed to spend time with SIBA Booksellers. He will be at Innisbrook for a four hour session with booksellers on Wednesday morning. Everyone can innovate and Doug will share the tips & tricks to getting to the meaningful uniqueness that translates into innovations. Don’t just take my word for it!
"The days spent at Eureka! Ranch were among the most productive of any "retreat" I've been involved in...and, I've been involved in many. Doug guided us through numerous ways of thinking about issues and creating innovative solutions. I would encourage everyone to take advantage of Doug's amazing sessions."- Chuck Robinson (former owner Village Books, founder of Chuck Robinson Associates)
"The weekend retreat at Eureka! Ranch made me re-think many of my processes and systems, compelling me to break down the walls of the stagnant models I had build and relied upon. I've since utilized the training I received to better empower my staff, freeing up more of my time for innovation and creative work. I highly recommend training with Doug Hall."--Nicole Sullivan (Bookbar)
"The (free) tools that Doug Hall provided through his Innovation Engineering allow me to approach challenges with a new perspective and a structure by which to engage and empower others around me in meaningful ways."-Ann Seaton (NCIBA Staff)
"Doug's weekend retreat at the Eureka! Ranch was a fully comprehensive weekend filled with information, knowledge, innovation, excitement, and ideas.....ideas.....ideas!!! I highly recommend anyone to take advantage of an opportunity to be a part of this program!"--Donna Fell (Sparta Books)
"Doug's retreat at the Eureka! Ranch was one of the most creative experiences I've had in a training session. He really helped me think outside the box. His ability to be innovative and to explain his concepts to us was unique and downright inspiring. To have the opportunity to sit in a session with him would be a real treat not to be missed!" --Stephanie Crowe (Page & Palette)

An Interview with Jamie Rogers Southern of Bookmarks, located in Winston-Salem, NC Name: Jamie Rogers Southern
Store and location: Bookmarks, Winston-Salem, NC
Number of years as a bookseller: 16
Best part about being a bookseller: Introducing someone to a book or author they didn't know about and then having that customer come back and say "that was amazing!" I will say, I equally love it if someone has an opposite reaction to a book than I did as it often sparks an interesting conversation.
What book(s) are you reading? The Witch Elm by Tana French (Viking, 10/18), Friday Black by Nana Kwame Adjei-Brenyah (Mariner, 10/18), The Map of Salt and Stars by Jennifer Zeynab Joukhadar (Touchstone, 5/18), Black Klansman by Ron Stallworth (Flatiron, 7/18)
Favorite handsell of 2018: Educated by Tara Westover
Best thing you did this year at your store: Other than successfully opening (!), I am really proud of diversifying our programming and reaching a wider audience than we ever have before. Getting new people in and reaching out into new pockets of our community is really a huge part of our mission and I'm extremely proud of how far we've come this year.
Social Media Stats (FB likes, Twitter followers, etc): 5,362 likes on FB, 1,095 Twitter, 1,825 Instagram, 5,000 e-newsletter subscribers.
What are some ways you work with your community? Oh goodness, where to start. Since we're a nonprofit, we are involved in our community at every level. We work heavily with our schools, we collaborate with approximately 75 nonprofit organizations and companies each year on events, and we try to create opportunities for people to engage with each other. We host a monthly Social Justice Storytime that has highlighted several groups, including recent refugees to our community through World Relief, Autism awareness, domestic violence, and more. We're working with several groups to cultivate community book clubs, like Pride Winston-Salem on an LGBTQ book club, and a local nutrition therapist on a body liberation book club.
Do you have any community partners you work with regularly? Several! Some of them include: RiverRun International Film Festival on their films that are based on books or books about film, a/perture-our local indie theatre on basically the same, Family Services, Junior League, Head Start, Chamber of Commerce, Forsyth County Public Libraries, Winston-Salem Writers, Salemtowne Retirement Community, Piedmont Opera, Winston-Salem Symphony, Kaleideum Children's Museum, Imprints Cares, Hispanic League, Hospice & Palliative Care Center, Arts Council of Winston-Salem/Forsyth County, and Old Salem Museums & Gardens.
Do you have passions that carry over into your bookselling life? Well, since my number one passion in life is reading, I'd say yes! I also enjoy wine, so it's also great that we share a space with a local brewery/coffee shop.
Top priority for 2018: This year, we are beginning a new initiative called Book Build: Fostering Connections by Building Collections. It has come out of our work with area schools and the realization that so many books in their collections are incredibly out of date and therefore irrelevant. Most children living in poverty will only come into contact with books through their school libraries. That means the books in our school libraries not only need to be current, children also need to be able to see themselves in the books they read. We have this amazing opportunity to change a child's life. Our goal is to raise enough money to provide our schools with 25,000 new books by 2020. It's very exciting and we can't wait to get these books to the schools.
Favorite SIBA programming benefit: I always get so many new ideas from talking to fellow booksellers and hearing what works/doesn't work in their stores. I always come away from any kind of networking event with one or two ideas to put into action in our store and community.

A Stellar SIBA Revival in Southern Pines! On Friday, July 20, booksellers from McIntyre’s Books, Quail Ridge Books, and The Country Bookshop gathered for a SIBA Bookseller Revival. SIBA Board member Kimberly Daniels Taws presented with Josh Floyd of IngramSpark, giving an overview of how bookstores are utilizing Ingram Sparks’ services in various ways. Kimberly and her team shared their experiences working with local authors, and their approach to publishing with IngramSpark. They help local authors publish their own work, or publish for them. Their services include project management, local expertise, and quality book production. The Country Bookshop has published two authors under their imprint, with plans for more. They also offer authors resources to DIY.
Ingram Sparks’ Josh Floyd explained how his program works in bookstores across the country in ways similar to Kimberly’s, from being a part of a program offered to authors, to becoming the printer for a bookstore’s imprint. He praised Eagle Eye Book Shop of Decatur, GA for their success with offering marketing services to authors.
Josh also offered samples of store and business-branded journals, produced by IngramSpark, and an example of a calendar that stores could replicate if they wanted to do a store or community calendar.
Booksellers spent the afternoon brainstorming for next year’s Independent Bookstore Day, NC-Piedmont Style. Look for some great things to happen for the twelve indie stores participating! Praise from attendees: "This revival session was jam-packed with good information. My coworker felt we picked up more in that short period that was useful to our store going forward than any other education we participated in this year. It was intimate enough that we felt we had meaningful participation and had opportunities to ask questions/ hear from our fellow booksellers. In short, we look forward to attending our next one!”--Keebe Fitch, McIntyre's Books, Pittsboro, NC "I thought the revival was terrific. Josh gave a really valuable presentation on using Ingram Spark for setting up a bookstore publishing program. Having Kimberly's first-hand experience with it made it even more useful. I couldn't scribble notes and ideas down fast enough. Equally valuable was the opportunity to network with a few other stores in our area. With inspiration from Josh's presentation and the ability to brainstorm on the spot we were able to flesh out a whole campaign for promoting our stores, NC authors, and Independent Bookstore day through next year! Something that would have taken months of emails otherwise and wouldn't have been half as good (or fun). Thanks to SIBA for giving us this opportunity - and to Ingram for a great program, continued support - and lunch!”--Sarah Goddin, Quail Ridge Books, Raleigh, NC "Thank you to everyone who came to the revival. We missed those of you who couldn’t join us! Josh did a fantastic job representing IngramSpark, a company that is truly changing the game of what is possible for our stores.” --Kimberly Daniels Taws, The Country Bookshop, Southern Pines, NC

SIBA Book List on Immigrants and the Refugee Experience SIBA wants to help readers of all ages better understand the plight of refugees and immigrants as they seek to make new homes and rebuild their lives. Our list includes titles from Avid's "Books for Kids Featuring the Immigrant or Refugee Experience” as well as titles recommended by publishers. We're continuing outreach to publishers and will keep adding to the list. If you know of a title you’d like us to add, please email lindamarie@sibaweb.com. Consider using the SIBA list on your e-commerce site to prompt awareness of this issue, and purchases for donation to schools, libraries, and those working with immigrant communities. Thank you for your help!
