Industry Leaders Commit Support to the Binc Foundation
Major Donors Pledge Funds to Help Booksellers
May 23, 2017
ANN ARBOR — Major forces in the bookselling industry have rallied together to provide significant funding for the Book Industry Charitable (Binc) Foundation. The industry support will help Binc provide financial assistance to booksellers facing challenges from medical or funeral expenses, loss of household income, domestic violence and more.
Binc Co-Ambassadors Ann Patchett and James Patterson led their respective publishers, HarperCollins and Hachette Book Group, in pledging generous support for Binc. Soon after, they were joined by industry-leading publishers Penguin Random House, Macmillan Publishers and Simon & Schuster.
Long-time Binc supporter, Ingram Content Group and its distribution brands, Ingram Publisher Services, Consortium, Perseus Distribution and PGW also pledged significant support.
Receiving backing from these business leaders is a pivotal moment for Binc, as it demonstrates a collective investment in booksellers across the nation. The practical and psychological importance of the bookseller safety net can’t be overlooked, according to Patchett.
“So often in booksellers’ lives a true disaster can be averted by the gift of a couple thousand dollars. It’s a small amount of money that can keep people in their jobs and in their homes. But more than that, Binc brings peace of mind,” she said. “We’re telling the booksellers, ‘We’re there for you. You matter to us.’ By joining the campaign, publishers are saying the same thing. We’re incredibly grateful for this support.”
Patterson stressed the important role booksellers play in improving the lives of the people who frequent their stores.
“Booksellers are essential to fostering a love for reading – one of the most basic and critical skills a person can have,” he said. “Thanks to the financial assistance provided by Binc, there are more booksellers out there hand-selling, and carefully curating book recommendations for each person who walks through their doors. They’re doing noble, vital work, and I’m happy to acknowledge their contributions.”
The support totals more than $224,000 including annual gifts and multi-year pledges, moving the Foundation closer to its goal of raising $500,000 annually to support bookstore employees and owners. Executives from each industry-leading company commended booksellers on their important work.
“The people who work as professional booksellers in the nation’s bookstores are critical players in connecting our authors to their readers,” said Brian Murray, President and CEO of HarperCollins Publishers. “By supporting Binc, HarperCollins is proud to be able to play a part in supporting this important community in times of need.”
“The health and vitality of the book industry and, indeed, literary culture, depends on independent booksellers, the life force that brings readers and books together,” said Michael Pietsch, CEO of Hachette Book Group. “We are very proud to help Binc support booksellers in challenging times, when they need it most.”
Each organization’s contribution will help booksellers when they need it most. Since 1996, Binc has stabilized more than 7,000 households in thousands of communities, and provided higher education and professional development for 724 booksellers. Leaders from each of the other supporting organizations also offered their reasoning for supporting the bookseller safety net.
Penguin Random House CEO Markus Dohle and Carolyn Reidy, President and CEO of Simon & Schuster stressed the value booksellers bring to their customers.
“Our booksellers give so much to their communities, so it is a privilege for Penguin Random House to give back to them through the Book Industry Charitable Foundation,” Dohle said. “This wonderful group has our deepest gratitude for their vital support of booksellers in their time of greatest hardship.”
“Booksellers are the vital cog in bringing authors to readers and providing a home and haven for culture and ideas within our communities, often at great personal sacrifice,” Reidy said. “We are pleased to support the Book Industry Charitable Foundation in its mission to provide important and much-needed emergency assistance for booksellers in times of need and crisis.”
President and CEO of Ingram Content Group Shawn Morin and President of Macmillan Publishers Don Weisberg both stressed their organizations’ pride in supporting booksellers when they need it most.
“We value our association with Binc and its good work on behalf of booksellers. We know that our commitment has direct and positive impact on the community and booksellers,” Morin said. “We are very proud to support Binc’s own mission of providing emergency assistance to this important part of our community.”
“We at Macmillan are proud to join our fellow publishers in supporting Binc and their efforts in helping booksellers across the country,” Weisberg said.
The outpouring of support shows how important booksellers are to publishers, and it’s well-timed. Each year, there is a growing need as the Foundation receives more grant requests. With the average assistance also rising, support is as important as ever.
“The Foundation is incredibly grateful for this vital support from our industry’s leaders,” said Binc Executive Director Pam French. “We owe so much to our ambassadors and these publishers for bringing us closer to our goal of sustainability and helping booksellers well into the future”

Wish you could offer your employees more benefits?
Compete with other retailers to attract the best and the brightest?
Let the Book Industry Charitable Foundation help!
Bookstore owners across the country have made Binc their own. The Book Industry Charitable Foundation is your Foundation and as such, stands ready to serve your store as an additional employee benefit. When hiring new employees and sharing the benefits of working for your store, share how Binc is there for them by virtue of their employment with you.
The Binc Foundation provides financial assistance to brick and mortar bookstore employees working full-time or part-time who demonstrate a personal financial need arising from severe hardship and/or emergency circumstances. The Foundation typically assists with needs arising from many qualifying life-events including:
- Disaster
- Domestic Violence
- Funeral Expenses
- Homelessness Prevention
- Loss of Household Income, due to:
- death in the household
- disability
- divorce or separation
- job loss of spouse or partner
- emergency child or elder care
- Serious Medical Expenses
- Utility Shut-off Prevention
Binc can assist any bookstore in setting up Payroll Withholding for employees, letting employees support other booksellers in need with a small donation amount (as little as $1 per pay period) to support Binc.
May is the month of Binc’s Campaign to Sustain effort so I encourage each store consider becoming a sustaining donor at $20 per month. This is a great way to support an organization that can hopefully assist you in attracting great booksellers. Plus any store that does become a sustaining donor at $20 a month, or more, before the end of May, will receive 240 B3! Points.

Dear Booksellers,
SIBA has just been informed of a title change for one of the Okra Pick books. Mark Powell's "Echolocation," isbn 9781507203385, is now titled "Small Treasons." The cover has also been redesigned (see attached photo), although the book's ISBN remains the same. Information in the book databases is updating slowly, but will hopefully be fully revised by the book's June 2nd release date.
SIBA has also updated it's websites and materials, although URL links may still reference "echolocation" in the interests of continuity. We'll be sending out updated and newly redesigned cards for your in store displays shortly, so watch for the interim Okra Picks mailing with your redesigned materials.
The newly launched Okra Picks Newsletter has also been updated to reflect the new book title:
https://sibaweb.site-ym.com/mpage/OkraPage158
If you haven't signed your store up for the newsletter, you can do so here:

Hello, dearest and most beloved booksellers,
As we get ready for the summer, here are the latest thing happening in the land of SIBA you should know about. Note especially the new Okra Picks Newsletter opportunity --
Highlights:
- Entering events on the ARTS Calendar is easier than ever!
- Announcing the Okra Picks Newsletter
- The Circle of Sites/Banner-for-Dues Program is being upgraded
- A video guide to the SIBA Member Hub
- Be a judge for the Southern Book Prize
- Registration is open for #SIBA17 in the Big Easy
THE ARTS CALENDAR, SIMPLIFIED
Over the last couple months, SIBA has received a rising number of requests from our members about how to enter their store events into the Calendar at Authors Round the South (authorsroundthesouth.com). The truth is, the ARTS Calendar is based on an older platform, and has always required a separate log in process, which is confusing for many members (and for SIBA Staff!). So we've simplified and streamlined the process:
- You can now enter events from your own account at SIBA. You do not need to be on your store master account. You do not even need to be logged in, (although it will be easier for you if you are).
- There are fewer "required" fields, so you don't need to know book ISBNs or enter event descriptions if you don't want to.
- You can add all the information and upload book and author photos in one step.
- If you want to enter multiple events at once, you can download a spreadsheet template, fill it out, and email it to SIBA at nicki@sibaweb.com.
It will take about 24 hours for any submitted event to appear on the calendar, so plan accordingly. And remember that you earn B3! points when you submit events yourself, instead of letting the SIBA elves enter them on your behalf.

CIRCLE OF SITES UPGRADE DEADLINE
If your store is participating in the Banner-for-dues program you need to know the system is being upgraded this spring to a more effective, stable, and secure platform. This will require you to post new code on your websites. Contact nicki@sibaweb.com for the code. The deadline is July 1, after which the old code will no longer be supported.
If you have ecommerce on your store site and are not doing the Banner-For-Dues program, you can contact Nicki to see if you are eligible. Basically any site where you can search for a book by ISBN qualifies. Once your banner is up, you don't have to do anything else, so it is an easy, hassle-free way to keep your SIBA membership current.
Currently appearing on Circle of Sites, (aka Lady Banks' Pick of the Week):

THE SIBA MEMBER HUB: VIDEO GUIDES
The new SIBA member hub has become more and more active as members sign on, check in with the site, and explore the different ways they can communicate with others and manage their own accounts. To help members understand the new site layout, SIBA Board member Stefanie Crowe and staffer Nicki Leone have been recording a series of short videos that take a quick tour through some of the site features.

#SIBA17 REGISTRATION IS OPEN
It's never too early to register!
SIBA returns to the Big Easy this coming September for the #siba17 Discovery Show. We'll be at the Sheraton New Orleans, right on Canal Street, the same hotel we were in the last time we visited NOLA in 2013.
And a word to the wise -- New Orleans, like Savannah, is a popular destination. We had sellout crowds in 2013 and expect the same this year. Meal tickets, especially, went very quickly.

Having your store's events listed not only means more of your customers may see them, but your store becomes more visible to publishers.

Dear SIBA members & stakeholders,
Early last month we had a wonderful day "Writing the Future of The Discovery Show" at SIBA in the Springtime! We appreciate so much everyone who came (about 45 of you) and contributed time and thought to SIBA's future. We learned a lot.
Your Board members plus Jamie Fiocco and Kelly Justice took many notes and here are some of the things we learned.
First, The Discovery Show is well-loved, and well-received by our industry. The major sentiment was much of what we offer, and when we offer it, is just what booksellers and exhibitors want. We will benefit from the many new ideas for education & experiences at the Discovery Show and look forward to implementing many of the suggestions. The main change is to consider the weekdays for the show rather than the weekend. Otherwise, the fall is preferable to other seasons, and moving around the south seems to be a favorite as well. Some of the ideas we can initiate right away include:
- finding a way for exhibitors to meet new booksellers they might not know
- promote in-booth signings
- make it easier to recognize sales reps.
Please continue to share any ideas or thoughts you have as to how we can improve. You can reach out to any Board Member or to our Executive Director.
In one of my first duties as your president, I have turned over the care and feeding of SIBA’s Advisory Council (AC) to new board member Kimberly Daniels. The AC is a function of the SIBA Board of Directors and the obligations are to meet for an hour at the Discovery Show and have several (VERY SHORT) conference calls throughout the year. The board uses the AC as a sounding board and a place to get initial feedback regarding various SIBA and bookstore related ideas and issues. The AC is a two-year commitment.
If you are interested in serving, or have any questions, please email with the subject line OPEN CALL-ADVISORY KimberlyDdaniels@gmail.com (please note that there are two ds in the email address).
Sincerely, your SIBA President,
Doug Robinson

It's never too early to register!
SIBA returns to the Big Easy this coming September for the #siba17 Discovery Show. We'll be at the Sheraton New Orleans, right on Canal Street, the same hotel we were in the last time we visited NOLA in 2013.
And a word to the wise -- New Orleans, like Savannah, is a popular destination. We had sellout crowds in 2013 and expect the same this year. Meal tickets, especially, went very quickly. So make your travel plans early:

SIBA IN THE SPRINGTIME
We have added a meet up event to the schedule! On Monday 3/6 after the Okra Dinner at 9:30 pm, Indies Forward is hosting a meet up at the hotel bar. Indies Forward is a group dedicated to growing leadership in the bookselling community by uniting young bookselling professionals. The future of your stores may well be in the hands of these folks, so please come by!
We also now have the details of the ABA educational sessions available:
Bookstores - An Inclusive Place for Dialogue and Discovery
In the current environment, customers are increasingly coming to bookstores for connection and communication, as well as for sources of a diverse range of voices and viewpoints.
At the upcoming ABA Spring Forum in Atlanta, GA, in response to member bookstore feedback and requests, ABA will be hosting a conversation led by ABA Board Member Jamie Fiocco where booksellers will share ideas and brainstorm about how bookstores can foster communication and create opportunities for people of diverse backgrounds to express and respond to differing views in the welcoming setting of a bookstore.
This will not be a traditional education session. It is designed to be an interactive discussion, where booksellers will be able to participate in open communication and problem solving -- in both large and small groups -- to clarify strategies for strengthening the unique role that bookstores play in their communities.

A LETTER FROM ABA PRESIDENT BETSY BURTON
Dear Booksellers,
My heart is full — as is, I’m sure, the heart of anyone who attended Winter Institute 12. Already pumped by a day visiting bookstores and by a charged and joyous opening reception, we were split wide open at breakfast on the first official day by the keynote address of Roxane Gay — a verbal fusillade of home truths (if you’ll forgive the dumb metaphor) that brought into sharp focus the issue of diversity. Not that we hadn’t been aware of it, talked about it, and taken action before, both on our ABA board and regionally, creating scholarships and making Booksellers Advisory Council (BAC) appointments, talking to publishers, and making plans to help and encourage the creation of new stores. But it hasn’t been enough — not nearly — as Gay pointed out so candidly, her words shocking us out of complacency and into the need for action. A perfect example of the radical candor that Wi12’s third keynote speaker, Kim Scott, discussed two days later.
During the Town Hall, as “we the board” sat on the dais and listened (and really heard), watched (and really saw) a series of impassioned, articulate, brave, visionary women — many from the new generation of booksellers — get up, one after another, the separation between us diminished and I thought my heart would break — not out of sadness but because I remembered myself at that age, how it felt to be excluded (albeit for reasons of sex and religion — or lack thereof — rather than color), felt again that anger, and knew that once harnessed it was going to hone their aim, amp up their power, catapult them — and all of us — into being our/their best selves, creating a better world in the process. And I was suddenly filled to overflowing with admiration for them, as they spoke one by one, and also, suddenly, with hope for the future. Not just their future but that of our industry when they take it in their capable hands, that of the world because there are people like them outside our industry as well as inside it, something we need to remember in this darkest of times. And they will take our world into their hands, lead the way forward in good directions. Of that I am certain.
It is a process, entering the world of governance — in ABA or any other sphere — but because the board heard what we heard, saw what we saw, we responded by creating a Diversity Task Force to give voice to booksellers’ concerns and draw them into ABA in a significant way and by increasing the number of members on the BAC with the express aim of creating a more diverse council. And please, anyone interested in serving on either, or in recommending someone to do so, e-mail me or call me at (801) 792-8363.
This might not feel like enough but it’s a strong start, especially because the BAC (along with regional boards) is where most nominations for ABA board members come from, since service on the BAC is a way to understand how the association works, how the book industry works, what issues we’ve faced in the past, and what decisions have been made to address them — along with the reasons for those decisions. All of which gives context to the role of governance and the governance process itself inside ABA.
Speaking of inside ABA, my heart broke yet again on my last night at Wi12 when I was privileged to witness during the ABA staff party another moving and life-changing event — the changing of the guard as Mark Nichols, a man beloved by everyone, was heralded by his colleagues. We all know Mark to be a quiet but brilliant, discerning and knowledgeable, kind and caring man who was involved in ABA seemingly forever and in every conceivable way. As I listened to his colleagues honor him, say goodbye to him, watched the sincerity that broke voices, brought on tears, knowing how hard they had all just worked putting on this miracle of an institute, how hard they work year after year to keep the wheels of technology and commerce, information and education turning ever faster, with the connection and love necessary to make it all work as brilliantly as it does, I saw Mark’s role at the heart of it all and I was again filled to overflowing. By their words, yes, but even more by his as this ever-wise, always valiant, loving, caring man expressed his utter faith in all of them. In their ability to help us keep our world in order, keep the wheels turning as another page turned over in ABA’s life and in ours.
Between these profound and unforgettable bookends, there was the rest of Wi12, three full days, four for those who took advantage of Friday’s bookstore tours and special workshops. Days filled with education targeted at our newest members and those more experienced, some about business, others involving the book itself. As I watched the presenters and authors at the Indies Introduce talk proceed with a wonderful program before an appreciative audience that numbered in the hundreds, I remembered that first Winter Institute, and again grew teary thinking of what ABA had wrought over the ensuing years, growing, with the help of hundreds of booksellers and scores of publishers, a small idea into a partnership that benefits us all — authors, publishers, booksellers, readers, and the books themselves — just as they had done again and again in program after program. I attended the marvelous Backlist Book Swap and the backlist panel that showcased innovative ideas and underlined our board’s conviction that a rich, new backlist program could be of vast benefit to publishers and booksellers alike, again benefiting this entire industry. I listened to sessions on finances and technology, localism, merchandizing, management; I heard keynotes and rep picks, talked to publishers during focus groups — as we all did, learning in the process how to be our best professional selves.
Day by day my optimism grew along with my pride at being a part of all this: Part of a dedicated, visionary board while the equally amazing BAC was also hard at work, not to mention the inspired and dedicated ABA staff, who bend their collective will and expend their amazing energy on our behalf. All of that and all of you. It seems to me there’s nothing we can’t do. As we sat there at the Town Hall, sometimes angry but always respectful, always visionary in the best sense, as, panel by panel, audience by audience, we mulled, made sense of, found useful nuggets of knowledge or technique or truth, our voices pooling and coming together… We are an amazing group of people: booksellers, ABA staff, publishers, authors, all fashioning a life around books. I can’t imagine a better one.

If you could change something about the SIBA Discovery Show, what would it be?
You will remember that last fall the talk of the Discovery Show was the plan to move the Fall Show to the spring, and partner with the GABBS show in Atlanta. Although the closure of the GABBS show has meant that plan will not go forward, the announcement has generated a lot of great discussion on the future of the SIBA Discovery Show, and how to keep it relevant and useful for our members.
To that end, SIBA is hosting it's regular "SIBA in the Springtime" education, with a focus on "writing the future of the SIBA Discovery Show." Join your fellow booksellers and book industry professionals for a day of brainstorming about the future direction of the Show. Imagination in encouraged. Bring all your dreams -- big and small.
The two-day event includes an author dinner on March 6 with three of your "Okra Pick" authors -- Michael Knight (Eveningland), Gina Kolata (Mercies in Disguise), and Taylor Brown (The River of Kings) plus two favorite Atlanta-based writers -- Patti Callahan Henry (The Bookshop at Water's End) and Joshilyn Jackson (Almost Sisters).
The American Booksellers Association will also be on hand to host a lunch, forum, and spring education presentation on March 7.
It is so very important that we hear from you. SIBA in the Springtime is FREE to core-member bookstores, so don't wait, register now.
THE IDEA BOX
If you can't make SIBA in the Springtime next month, or if you can, but you've already got so many ideas you just can't contain them all, then you can put your thoughts in THE IDEA BOX.
The Idea Box is a new benefit for SIBA members, a place to submit feedback, hopes, wishes, and dreams to the SIBA staff and indeed the entire SIBA membership. Ideas can be reviewed and voted on by members. SIBA uses the votes to gauge member interest and get an idea of how strongly you feel about something.
Right now, the Idea Box is geared towards re-envisioning the Discovery Show. So submit your ideas about what you think would be the perfect show. What you submit will help frame the discussion in Atlanta.

For Immediate Release
January 31, 2017
The Southern Book Prize creates the Conroy Legacy Award
(Columbia SC) The Southern Independent Booksellers Alliance (SIBA) announces the creation of a “Lifetime Achievement” category for their annual book award program, The Southern Book Prize (formerly known as The SIBA Book Award). The new category, the Conroy Legacy Award, honors the example of beloved author Pat Conroy and recognizes writers who have achieved a lasting impact on their literary community. Recipients will have shown the following attributes:
- Support for independent bookstores, both in their own communities and in general.
- Writing that focuses significantly on their own home place.
- Demonstrates support of other writers, especially new and emerging authors.
The Conroy Legacy Award is given to one writer in SIBA territory per year. A juried panel of SIBA member booksellers representing all of SIBA's states will choose among nominated writers to determine the year’s winner.
Although it is not necessary for a nominated writer to have a new book out in the award year, nominated writers must be living, and must have books in print. Nominations must come from SIBA member bookstores. The Legacy Award provides an opportunity for its member stores to recognize writers who have been important in their community.
Both a donation to the Pat Conroy Literary Center and a donation to a literary entity close to the heart of the writer will be made in the name of the Legacy Award recipient.
In 2016, SIBA rechristened its annual SIBA Book Award as The Pat Conroy Southern Book Prize to honor Conroy and his profound impact on Southern literary life. Although it was intended as a one-time event, the booksellers immediately responded with names of writers they felt deserved that recognition. The Conroy Legacy Award was created to celebrate the deep connections between independent bookstores and the writers in their communities.
“The Conroy Legacy Award,” says SIBA Executive Director Wanda Jewell, “is our way of honoring the strong connection and partnership between writers and independent booksellers. We are all deeply involved in the literary life, in the life of the book, and in telling the story of our home place.”

For immediate release
January 26, 2017
(Columbia, SC) In an effort to expand exposure to its bookstore members and their
customers to books by people of color, starting February 1 SIBA is
offering a 35% discount to publishers who wish to promote their
authors and illustrators of color for 2017. Any book that has been
written or illustrated by a person of color is eligible for the
discount, which applies to all SIBA promotions with the exception of
its annual Holiday Catalog, a shared revenue product.
“We had a strong call from our members to increase diversity in SIBA
programming,” said Executive Director Wanda Jewell, “and to work with
stores to increase the demand for diverse books,” adding that SIBA has
already made an internal commitment to promote diverse authors and
books in its consumer-targeted programs, such as the Lady Banks
Commonplace Book newsletter.
“But it is an all-hands-on-deck process,” she added, “our booksellers
are deeply committed to diversity, and we want publishers to see our
membership as an enthusiastic and profitable audience for their
divese writers.”
By offering the discount on SIBA promotional programs, Jewell hopes
that publishers will not only send more diverse authors to SIBA
territory, but also that they will see the benefit of committing more
promotional dollars to their books as a whole.

A Letter from the SIBA President
Okra Pick Nominations Due
Check Your Account Information
Dear SIBA Members,
I hope Small Business Saturday was successful for you all and that holiday shoppers are out in force at all your stores.
This will be my last letter as your SIBA President. Fellow board member Doug Robinson, owner of Eagle Eye Book Shop in Decatur, GA, will take over from me on January 1st, 2017. Doug’s email address is doug@eagleeyebooks.com and I know he’d love to hear from you on any topic.
As part of the Board’s duty to look to the future on our members’ behalf, three board members -- Doug Robinson, Linda-Marie Barrett, and Stephanie Crowe -- attended a Trends seminar in Chicago this month to get trained out how to recognize, analyze, and capitalize on trends.
Most of the Board, including myself as outgoing board member, and Kimberly Daniels-Taws as incoming board member will be attending Winter Institute in Minneapolis. We hope many of you will also be braving the cold of Minnesota and we hope to see you there. If you’re attending, remember to pack your y’all buttons so we can find each other more easily. If you’ve never gotten (or have lost) your y’all button, look for Doug in Minneapolis and he’ll have a stash to hand out to you.
I’ve greatly enjoyed my 6 years on the SIBA Board and my last two years as your SIBA President and thank you for all your support of SIBA.
Wishing you a Happy Holiday!
-Jill Hendrix
Your outgoing SIBA President
Winter Okra Pick Nominations are due!
The deadline for the Winter Okra Pick nominations is tomorrow, December 1. Click here to nominate. Make sure the books you are most looking forward to are the ones everyone will be looking forward to!
Check your account information!
The SIBA website "member hub" has received an upgrade, so if you log into your account, things are going to look a little different.
Here's a basic overview of the changes:
- You can now fix it so you can log in using Facebook.
- The site is mobile-friendly, so you can now check it on your phone. Designated Android and iPhone apps are coming soon.
- Once you log in, you can see all the SIBA notifications, plus news from other SIBA stores, in your main feed, just like you do with facebook. In fact, the site is set up very much like facebook, so it should be easy to see important news.
Here's how to log in:
Login Link: http://sibaweb.site-ym.com/login.aspx
Contact nicki@sibaweb.com if you don't know your login information.
It helps SIBA immensely if the information in your account is accurate, so please take a moment to check. The updated member hub is entirely mobile-friendly, so you can easily log in on your phones and tablets.
Here are three things to do:
- Log in via facebook so the system will remember you
- Check your account and update anything that needs updating
- Connect with other SIBA stores, and with SIBA itself (Nicki Leone & Wanda Jewell). You may have prompts on your account for where one or both of us has reached out to you. If not, just click on our usernames from your "Feed" page to connect with us. You'll see other connection suggestions as well.

Dearest and most beloved booksellers,
We know you have other things on your mind this week -- you and the entire rest of the country! But please do take a moment to read the items below. They are things we think will be important and helpful to your business in the coming weeks and we want to make sure you take full advantage.
I. Indies First/Small Business Saturday is October 26
An open letter from ABA CEO Oren Teicher
Dear Bookseller,
Indies First/Small Business Saturday, November 26, will be here before we know it, and I wanted to be sure you had explored the many offers of generous business terms (http://www.bookweb.org/2016-indies-first-publisher-terms) for ABA members from our publisher partners. The Indies First publisher specials are really extraordinary, and with thoughtful ordering these terms can make a real difference to your bottom line.
As we've been discussing at the recent ABACUS sessions at the Fall Regional Shows, reducing the cost of goods is critical to the profitability of indie bookstores, and these offers help you do exactly that. The ordering periods vary, so don’t miss out.
One of the most generous offers – in discount, ordering period, and ease of use – comes from Baker & Taylor (http://www.bookweb.org/2016-indies-first-publisher-terms). I'd strongly encourage you take advantage of B&T's offering, which starts on November 20th and runs through December 3.
And while you’re at it, please add your Indies First event activity (http://bookweb.org/store-indies-first-activity-registry) to the national map. You can add your information now or just let us know an event is on the schedule and come back and fill in the details later. The stronger our map, the better it is for Indies First, our customers, and our publisher partners.
With sincere thanks,
Oren Teicher, CEO
