GET YOUR STAFF INVOLVED

SIBA wants to reach your frontline booksellers

Did you know that every SIBA core member store can add as many staff as they'd like to their account? SIBA encourages stores to include their staff under their accounts so they have access to all the information and opportunities available to SIBA member booksellers, including information about scholarships, review copy offers, calls for nominations for Okra Picks and the Southern Book Prize, and heads up about important upcoming events.

Here's how to add staff members to your account:

  1. Log in. Then navigate to your account profile by clicking at the top of the page where it says "Welcome"
  2. Click on the "Information & Settings" tab on the left in your profile.
  3. Select "Sub-accounts" from the options at the top of the profile.

From there, you can create sub accounts yourself, or send invites to your staff. Every account must have it's own unique email address, so there is no need to sign up all your staff under the store email. But you can invite them using their own email.

You can also simply send a list of your staff -- names and email addresses -- to nicki@sibaweb.com, and SIBA will add them to your accout.

THE SOUTHERN BOOK PRIZE

Nominations are due by February 14! | NOMINATE HERE

#southernbookprize #SBP18badge

NOMINATIONS OPEN FOR 2018 AWARD

Each year, hundreds of booksellers across the South vote on their favorite "handsell" books of the year. These are the "southern" books they have most enjoyed selling to customers; the ones that they couldn't stop talking about. The Southern Book Prize was created to recognize great books of southern origin.

What books can be nominated? For a book to be eligible, it must be set in the South, or the author must be Southern (preferably both) and it must have been published within the previous calendar year.

Who can nominate a book? Books can be nominated by SIBA-member booksellers. But stores can submit nominations on behalf of the their customers, so if you are not a bookseller, you can request your local bookstore nominate a title on your behalf.

If I nominated an Okra Pick, does that count? It sure does! All Okra Pick books are automatically included as Southern Book Prize nominations.

BRILLIANT BOOKSELLER IDEA OF THE WEEK:

Encouraging Diversity in Young Readers

Northshire's 'Open Mind' Scholarship
Northshire Bookstore, with locations in Manchester, Vt., and Saratoga Springs, N.Y., has launched the Open Mind Scholarship, which is designed to honor "the diversity of thought, feelings, information and perspectives found in books, as well as the power of books to change people's lives." Each year the Northshire will award $1,000 scholarships to two college-bound high school seniors, one from New York and one from Vermont. To enter the contest, students must write up to one page on how a book has exposed them to something new and how it has impacted their lives.

MEET THE BOOKSELLER!

Stephanie Jones-ByrneStephanie Jones-Byrne, Malaprop's Bookstore/Cafe, Asheville, NC

store || facebook

Name: Stephanie Jones-Byrne

Store and location:
Malaprop's Bookstore/Cafe

Number of years as a bookseller: More than 14 all together. I worked at a used, rare and antiquarian shop in Florida for about 9 years and have worked at Malaprop's twice for a total of about 5 years.

Best part about being a bookseller?:
This is really boring, but it's talking to people about books. There are new and fascinating conversations to be had every day.

What book(s) are you reading?:
When They Call You a Terrorist: A Black Lives Matter Memoir by Patrisse Khan-Cullors and Asha Bandele.
Future Home of the Living God by Louise Erdrich, The Infinite Future by Tim Wirkus

Favorite handsell of 2017:
I have two: The Power by Naomi Alderman and Lovecraft Country by Matt Ruff

staff picksBest thing you did this year at your store:
This is really tough. The store hosts wonderful authors and is consistently amazing thanks to a lot of teamwork. If I have to pick the best thing I did personally, it would be revamping our "Blind Date With a Bookseller" system. We choose staff favorites, wrap them in brown paper and put descriptive terms on them along with the ISBN and price so folks can buy them knowing what makes them great reads, but not knowing what they are. We were handwriting the information, but it has become so popular that it was becoming a full-time job. So, I made a template that allows us to make and print labels for each book. We print several labels at time and keep them filed so a bookseller can quickly wrap a book and glue on a label. It's still a big job to keep up with demand, but I think it's a bit easier now.

MalapropsSocial Media Stats (FB likes, Twitter followers, etc):
Facebook @malapropsbooks 14,181 likes
Twitter @Malaprops 16,400 followers
Instagram @malapropsbookstore 1,791 followers

Top priority going into 2018:
I joined the Author Events and Marketing team in 2017 and it's a great team. I want to help continue to expand our events, streamline our event processes and grow our audience and community.

Favorite SIBA programming benefit:
SIBA helps booksellers to be resources for each other. It can save a lot of wheel reinventing.

BRILLIANT BOOKSELLER OF THE WEEK:

bullet journalingBeing in step with the trend "Assisted Development."
Trendwatching.com notes that "post-demographic consumers of all ages are crafting new narratives of adulthood. In 2018, they'll look to brands to help. Changing social attitudes, converging economic pressures and endless choice have scrambled the way millions of people think about, attain – or avoid! – traditional markers of adult life. Now, post-demographic consumers will look to brands to teach them life skills, let them outsource daily tasks, or help them realize personal life goals." Two NC bookstores are doing just this by hosting workshops to help readers organize their lives through bullet/dot journaling:

Malaprop's Bookstore/Cafe in Asheville: Dot Journaling Workshop with Clara Boza: Back by popular demand: Dot Journaling! Dot Journaling, also known as Bullet Journaling®, is sweeping the world as a smart, one-place-for-everything approach to journaling, planning, tracking, and note-taking. It's a system that will help you organize the present, record the past, and plan for the future.

Bookmarks in Winston-Salem: Bullet Journal Workshop: Learn from our friend, Molly Keener, as she leads you through creating your own bullet journal.

HOLIDAY CATALOG UPDATES

holiday catalogWeb-versions, resources, and special offers are now available

The Web-versions of the SIBA holiday catalog is now available to stores to post on their websites. We think they look very nice! See a demo version

  • Store with Indiecommerce Sites:
The American Booksellers Association will have the catalog available for stores to add to their sites shortly.
  • Stores with other ecommerce options:
SIBA can provide a customized file with your store ecommerce links. Email nicki@sibaweb.com
  • Stores without ecommerce:
We have a "no links" version of the catalog you can link to here.

You earn 5 B3! points for posting the holiday catalog on your site.

What SIBA is doing to help:
The catalog will be promoted at AuthorsRoundtheSouth.com (ARTS) starting the week of Thanksgiving. Stores with active ecommerce will rotate as the click through destination for each of the books. The catalog titles are also featured in the Lady Banks newsletter as a "gift guide" and the gift guide itself is featured between Thanksgiving and the New Year on the ARTS Facebook page and on the Lady Banks Bookshelf. In short, SIBA will be making a concerted effort to drive traffic to the websites of stores that ordered the catalog.

  • Materials to help with in-store catalog displays, and "shareable" graphics for your social media are available here (scroll to the bottom)
  • Both Ingram and Baker & Taylor have ordering specials in place for holiday catalog titles:

EUREKAsiba CALL FOR PROPOSALS

November 15th is the deadline to submit a propsal for the upcoming EUREKAsiba talks.

In the spirit of discoveries worth sharing, SIBA invites proposals for 11-18 minute TEDx Talk format presentations on a given topic of interest to booksellers. We'd like proposals about a great idea. Ideas can be new or surprising, challenge a belief your audience of booksellers already has, or an idea with a compelling new argument behind it. We will choose ten EUREKA talks. This call should be considered by booksellers, authors, publishers, sales reps, and other industry professionals. We'd love to hear from you. Proposals are due November 15. Send proposals to Wanda Jewell

UNDISCOVERED TREASURES: EVENT PITCH SHEET

Event Pitch SheetHow does your store present itself to publishers when you are looking to have an author come to the store for an event? The competition can be high, and publishers are careful about how they spend their marketing dollars. Savvy stores create a resume of sorts for publicists that will help them see at a glance the strengths of their store and their ability to host a successful author event.

Here's a link to an event pitch sheet developed by The Bookwom in Colorado -- use it as a model to create your own store "event pitch sheet." It will also be a useful exercise in assessing your store's strengths as well as places you can improve in you own event programs.
