"I can say this about my TRIO experience: I have sold out at every event I went to. But TRIO is not just about sales, it's about the family that Shari Smith creates among writers, visual artists and songwriters. And that family is unparalleled. I have met folks that are woven into my fabric for the rest of my life. "
-Bren McClain, author of One Good Mama Bone
" I have sold out at every event I went to."
"Trio has been a wonderful experience. To see and hear your book through the talents of people like artist Robert Oren Eades and musician Radney Foster is something you do not expect when you sit down to write, but once the works come together they form a holistic artifact that is undeniably more powerful than a single book, a single piece of art, a single song. Trio has gotten my book into hands that may have otherwise never held it, and it has gotten my words into the eyes and ears of people who may never read them. "
- Wiley Cash, author of The Last Ballad

"You're put into a room with all your betters, people you read and admire. Just when you start thinking the joke is nearly up, you find resting for all to see a painting by an artist who through some strange magic has spun your words into something beautiful, making real what was unreal. You've never met her, but looking at that painting makes you feel like you're kin. Now comes Eddie and Eddie's guitar. He smiles at you and thanks you, but you don't know for what until his song reaches so far down into your soul that you forget to breathe. When he's done and everybody's hollering, you realize this man has said more in a few stanzas than what took you more than a hundred thousand words. But it gets even better. As much of a treat as you've been given, the real blessing is spending an entire weekend with these people. You laugh and cry and sing and hug, and all the mess you're going through, all the worry and hurt back home, is easier borne. That's what Trio has meant to me. Shari and Eddie have sold more of my books than I could have ever managed. They've brought my name to places I could have never reached. But the community they've adopted me into is even more precious. That is the truest treasure."

What is TRIO?
TRIO is a traveling exhibit of art, music and literature that celebrates the inspirational power of great storytelling. First conceived by Shari Smith of Working Title Farm, and a writer and singer for "The Shoe Burnin' Show," TRIO is a testament to the way words, music and art can come together around the power of a single story. Each TRIO starts with a book, which is given to a musician and a visual artist, who then write a song, a piece of music, a work of art inspired by the story.
The TRIO exhibit debuts at the SIBA Discovery Show, and then travels around the South January - September, 2019, hosted and sponsored by SIBA member bookstores.
Contingent upon acceptance, placement in the TRIO exhibit means:
- Your Book is traveled, promoted to bookstores, booksellers, art patrons, and music fans throughout the country
- Exclusive launch at SIBA 2019, TRIO Exhibit prominently displayed throughout the entire weekend of the Discovery Show.
- A full year of cross promotion on social media from the songwriter and visual artist, continual social media on the TRIO Facebook page, and SIBA's 50,000 social media contacts
- $1200 rebate in SIBA advertising
- A Lady Banks feature on each TRIO
SIBA sees TRIO as a unique opportunity for its members. Its mission is closely aligned with independent bookstore values, with the values of readers, of anyone who has ever been inspired by a book. The exhibit is an example of the real world power of real world connections, and can't be mimicked in a virtual environment. It is an unusual, unique event that mirrors the unusual and unique nature of SIBA member stores. By bringing TRIO to their town, a SIBA store can create ties with other community organizations, reach new audiences, and bring attention to the store.

We really enjoyed having the TRIO exhibit up in the store. It looked great and drew attention from our customers and lots of conversations.
We really enjoyed having the TRIO exhibit up in the store. It looked great and drew attention from our customers and lots of conversations. The event itself was very special, with the talented musicians, writers and artists presenting their portions of the collaboration. Thank you for sending it our way.

We enjoyed the benefits of goodwill, publicity and reinforcing our connections with the local population. We also sold some books which were related to the exhibit. This was a very positive benefit for Eagle Eye due to the small amount of effort compared to the increased public awareness for our book store.

The TRIO Exhibit hosted by NewSouth Books was displayed against the windows of a commercial building on Montgomery's Court Square, facing up historic Dexter Avenue to the state capitol. This is one of the busiest areas in Montgomery, and the exhibit was lighted and thus available to anyone passing by 24/7 for the duration of the exhibit. It was up during the early part of the summer, when the weather was nice and downtown was full of tourists milling about in the vicinity of the exhibit. We supplemented the exhibit's built-in signage with a large banner/poster explaining NewSouth's sponsorship and giving directions to our store where the featured books were on display and could be purchased. We have no way of knowing how many people viewed the exhibit, but we received many favorable comments about it.
