Bottom Line:  Differentiate yourself.  Start small and build.  Creating Services and Classes offers the largest growth area for indie bookstores since they are hard to reproduce online.

Looking to make ends meet? SBA Microloan Program

SBA’s Microloan Program provides loans up to $50,000 to start-up, newly established, or growing small businesses. The average microloan size is about $13,000. While the microloan program is open to all entrepreneurs, according to aSBA Fact Sheet, the program especially supports underserved markets, including borrowers with little to no credit history, low-income borrowers, and women and minority entrepreneurs in rural and urban areas who generally do not qualify for conventional loans, or other, larger SBA guaranteed loans.

Any bookseller interested in applying for a microloan should contact a SBA lender in their area. The Microloan Program is available in select locations in most states. For more information, it is recommended that booksellers first contact SBA at  (800) 827-5722, or one of SBA’s partners, such as SCORE or a Small Business Development Center. Booksellers can also contact their local SBA District Office.

Call for SIBA Book Award nominations

Last call for the 2012 SIBA Book Award Nominations!

Book Award CalendarFebruary 14th is the deadline. Show your love for your favorite southern books!

Each year, hundreds of booksellers across the South vote on their favorite "handsell" books of the year. These are the "southern" books they have most enjoyed selling to customers; the ones that they couldn't stop talking about. The SIBA Book Award was created to recognize great books of southern origin.

What books can be nominated?
Books are nominated in several categories, including fiction, nonfiction, poetry, cooking and children's. For a book to be eligible, it must be set in the South, or the author must be Southern (preferably both) and it must have been published within the previous calendar year.

Who can nominate a book?
Books can be nominated by SIBA-member booksellers . But stores can submit nominations on behalf of the their customers, so if you are not a bookseller, you can request your local bookstore nominate a title on your behalf.
