Curated, Localized Lists on Unmet Demand for Books
Panorama Picks provides booksellers with localized, curated lists of books that library patrons are waiting to borrow. This unique program uses aggregated, anonymized local library hold list data to identify titles beyond the obvious bestsellers with long wait times for local library patrons. The project makes these lists available to booksellers at no cost—giving booksellers, publishers, authors and others a new, easy and cost-free way to promote titles of local interest and increase sales.
The project’s first regional lists of in-demand titles are available below. The project will compile and publish new lists on a quarterly basis. The list selection methodology will be refined in response to user feedback. The project is actively promoting the program to local booksellers. We hope that these new insights into the interests of local readers will help libraries and booksellers alike better serve active readers in their communities.

DATA-DRIVEN INSIGHTS ON THE INTERESTS OF LOCAL READERS
Our regional Panorama Picks lists are generated using aggregated, anonymized U.S. public library ebook demand data and the following framework:
-
We create lists of the most in-demand titles in each category for eight regions around the country.
-
We then identify and rank the adult/young-adult fiction and non-fiction titles published in the last 12 to 24 months. These are titles booksellers are likely to have in stock that in many cases aren’t enjoying significant sales.
-
Next, we weed out well known bestsellers, book club selections and other heavily promoted titles.
The resulting lists highlight a wide range of in-demand titles. Some are familiar titles that are enjoying sustained popularity. Others are less well known titles that have, for one reason or another, generated strong local interest.
Panorama Picks: Regional Lists
The regional groupings below generally mirror the American Booksellers Association’s (ABA) groupings and naming conventions. A few adjustments have been made to simplify the reporting and presentation of the recommendations.
The lists are available in two formats:
The Google Sheets versions include the BISAC codes for each title. The PDF versions are formatted for easy printing and do not include the BISAC codes.
The current lists reflect library demand for the first quarter of 2019.
