ABA Membership Offer and IndieLite Promotion
In light of the recent B&T news, we are partnering with the American Booksellers Association to offer a discount on ABA membership. Members of SIBA are invited to join the ABA for the rest of the year at the discounted rate of $50. We believe association membership is vital to enable our organizations to more effectively advocate on behalf of the indie channel.
In addition to this offer, for those stores who were participants in B&T’s Books and More e-commerce platform, ABA’s IndieCommerce team is offering the following promotion: 3 months of their IndieLite platform free, followed by $25/month for the remaining 9 months of the first year. We hope by reducing start-up costs, you’ll be able to more effectively utilize the e-Commerce platform to improve sales.
The ABA member promotion is through January 31, 2020, at which time you can renew your membership for $199 for the year. ABA offers quarterly and monthly payment options. IndieLite will be $50/month after the first promotional year.
Please complete the ABA application using the promo code regional19 or contact ABA’s membership team at email@example.com if you’d like to take advantage of these offers.
Jill Hendrix, owner of Fiction Addiction in Greenville, SC, and founder of Stress Less, a blog where she shares “tools and musings to reduce stress and increase joy,” presented her approach to “Keeping Your Expenses on a Tight Leash” in a recent SIBA webinar. The webinar was interactive throughout, with Jill asking booksellers to share about various financial topics, including financial stress, and goals.
Jill described her own journey from feeling great financial stress to getting her store’s finances on track and achieving a healthier work/life balance. She explained her path to a mindset shift and how this supported initiating positive changes in her business. Some topics covered:
- Changing your attitude toward money, expenses, and profit
- Sorting expenses into four “houses”: rainmaking, protection, productivity, consumption
- Evaluating expenses to determine if they are achieving their goals
- Involving community--employees, a working group of other business owners, your bookkeeper--in the process
Jill also offered quick wins, such as opening a new bank account and transferring 2% of every cash/check deposit into that account, and making a pruning date, by creating a repeating calendar entry “Prune My Expenses,” and allowing 3-4 hours for the process.

With LifeWay Christian Stores closing its brick-and-mortar locations, many of their customers are looking for Christian books from other sources, including independent bookstores. Knowing what books to bring in can be challenging for buyers who don’t know this market. While at BookExpo, SIBA reached out to HarperCollins Christian Publishing’s Dan Van Gorp, Senior Director of Independent Retail, who provided their bestselling titles at LifeWay during the last 12 months. We’ve created an Edelweiss Collection for booksellers, and will continue to add titles as we reach out to other publishers for this market.
SIBA booksellers have a great free resource in The Independent Bookseller, a website that includes a calendar of bookselling events that you can download to your store’s Google calendar, a publishing industry directory to guide you on the relationships between publishers, imprints, distributors, and rep groups, a book award database, and more handy links and facts. Sign up for their weekly newsletter and you’ll receive news and updates, including action items on ABA, regional association, and publisher programming deadlines. Founder Robert Martin writes, "I've been creating and curating resources for independent booksellers at www.theindependentbookseller.com because I believe in independent bookstores. They are crucial to strong communities, just as they are crucial to a free, diverse, and just way of life."
Macmillan Diversity Scholarship Returns:

Turnrow Books for Sale
Turnrow Book Co., the 13-year-old independent bookstore located in Greenwood, MS is officially for sale. Owner Fred Carl, Jr. is currently working with his General Manager and accountant to finalize the valuation and asking price. Turnrow was founded by Jamie and Kelly Kornegay in 2006. Since then, Turnrow has been the Delta's headquarters for new books for adults and children, signings by major authors, community events, live music, and art exhibitions. Turnrow survived the financial crisis of 2008 and the rise of Amazon by adapting to online sales and curating an ever-evolving inventory of hand-selected books by its small staff. Frequently mentioned in national media as "the most beautiful bookstore in America," Turnrow has featured all manner of author visits, from intimate conversations to large-scale talks or panels with over 150 guests. Turnrow has hosted events with three Man Booker Prize winners, four Pulitzer Prize winners, two National Book Award winners, one Newberry Medal winner, one Caldecott Medal winner, and three James Beard Award winners. In the past four years, Turnrow has stepped up its commitment to local schools, bringing authors to visit with students and stocking classrooms and libraries with new books. One year ago, Turnrow was featured by the American Booksellers Association at its annual Winter Institute, which brought over a hundred booksellers and publishers from around the world to tour the store and downtown Greenwood. Turnrow was honored as Main Street Greenwood’s Retailer of the Year for 2017 and as the Greenwood-Leflore Chamber of Commerce’s Small Business of the Year for 2018.
