From the Board: A Pandemic Prep List
From John Cavalier, co-owner of Cavalier House Books in Denham Springs, LA and SIBA Board Member
With Small Business Saturday a little more than a week away, most of us are already in the thick of holiday sales and focusing on making the most out of Q4. Of course there need be no reminder that this holiday season will be
different from any other, but our good friends at NAIBA put together a very comprehensive list of action items to prepare their stores for the worst case scenario of another shutdown. We've all grown accustomed to operating our
businesses in a state of precarity and by now we're all old pro's at the pivot, but I encourage everyone to take a moment to print this list out and give it a read through. The old adage that an ounce of prevention is worth
a pound of cure keeps ringing louder and I know that in our current circumstance we can all appreciate that old saying in the most literal ways possible!

NVNR on Demand: All Because You Matter
"I believe that now more than ever we need to remind our children of all the ways in which they matter." -- Tami Charles
The first event of New Voices New Rooms was also one of the most inspiring and uplifting. Author Tami Charles and illustrator Bryan Collier talk about the creation of All Because You Matter, a mother's beautiful
message to her son. Collier gives a fascinating peek into his studio and how he created the stunning artwork for the book, as well as talking about his own evolution as an artist. (There was an Ezra Jack Keats epiphany). A gorgeous
book, and a desperately-needed positive message for everyone-child or adult.
NVNR on Demand: Employee Handbooks
Rachel Watkins from Avid Books in Athens, GA, and Rebecca Fitting of Greenlight Bookstore in Brooklyn, NY discuss the process they went through in developing an Employee Handbook, what they learned, and why taking the time to create
one has been valuable for their stores.
SIBA promotes six new books every month to readers, the customers of our member stores, in our Lady Banks Bookshelf promotion. These titles appear at the top of our weekly Lady Banks Commonplace Book newsletter, which has a circulation
of over 60k. We also feature them above the fold on the homepage of Authors ‘Round the South and as the cover image of the ARTS Facebook page, with buy links promoted to our 15,000 Facebook friends. Plus, we boost these titles
on our Facebook page for thousands more views. A different member store is featured with the titles every week. We give SIBA member stores a heads up on each month’s featured titles, to encourage in-store and online displays.
For publishers looking to promote their new titles out to readers across the South, Lady Banks Bookshelf is our greatest value because of high visibility and engagement across multiple platforms. Contact us for more information or
to get your titles on “The Shelf” in coming months.

The Liar's Dictionary by Eley Williams Reviewed by Amanda Thomas, Story on the Square, McDonough, GA On Edelweiss | Buy
It is incredibly difficult to effectively describe a book whose primary theme is words, but I will try: The Liar's Dictionary is as much a curiously clever story binding an eccentric, lisping lexicographer who creates
his own absurd pseudo-vocabulary, and the intern a century later to somehow find them, as it is a curated treasure trove of odd and wonderful words that so perfectly capture the 'crucial-silly' balance in life and lexicon.
A Sled for Gabo by Emma Otheguy, Ana Ramírez González (Illus.) Reviewed by Talia Smart, Flyleaf Books, Chapel Hill, NC On Edelweiss | Buy
Gabo thinks he doesn't have the right gear for a snowy day, but his family, neighbors, and new friends have enough creativity and radiant joy to keep him warm. This bright, sweet story sparkles with loving community (and fantastic
illustrations). A new winter classic!
Lore by Alexandra Bracken Reviewed by Deanna Bailey, Story on the Square, McDonough, GA On Edelweiss | Buy
This had me at the edge of my seat from beginning to end. If you love Greek mythology you will love this! Every seven years nine Greek Gods walk the Earth as mortals. They are hunted by descendants of Ancient Bloodlines to be killed
and to receive their powers and immortality. Lore has ran away from this world since her family was brutally murdered by a rival line. But there is an upcoming hunt and she comes across her childhood friend Castor, and the
goddess Athena. After binding her fate with Athena, she goes into the hunt to fight a new God to avenge her family and save her home, New York City.
The Patriots by Winston Groom Reviewed by Lee Hendrix, Fiction Addiction, Greenville, SC On Edelweiss | Buy
With having only a passing cursory familiarity with Alexander Hamilton, John Adams, and Thomas Jefferson's role in the structuring of these United States, I was very struck by how little American politics has changed since it's
founding. These brilliant personalities are laid before us in such frank and awe inspiring detail as to give one pause. We are privy to the schisms and bonds between all three men and how they all aspired for the same true
goal. That being Life, Liberty and the pursuit of Happiness for a fledgling country. Albeit, usually at great personal loss.
