Summer Celebration (Register)
SIBA’s 21-Day Racial Equity Challenge began on Monday, April 12. 90 booksellers
and book industry professionals from across the country are participating. Challenge prompts can be accessed on the Challenge homepage, to read and share with colleagues. We’re
hosting a Challenge Bulletin Board where participants can share links and post comments. So far, the response has been inspiring. We've also compiled a list of resources to
check out as well, for future reading.
Putting together this programming required a lot of staff time and professional guidance. To that end SIBA has created a Diversity, Equity and Inclusion Fund dedicated
to supporting DEI programming and training to its members, and supporting and amplifying BIPOC voices our membership and industry. We're deeply grateful to Sasquatch Books, Sourcebooks, and HarperCollins for their early and generous
support for this initiative.
SIBA is seeking nominations for candidates for the SIBA Board. Nominees must be from a SIBA member store in good standing, and self-nominations are encouraged.
When this call is sent out each spring, we usually say something like "SIBA Board members are a hard working bunch. Serving on the board is both rewarding and enlightening." This past year has demonstrated just how true
that is. If SIBA has been at all helpful or a resource for your store during the pandemic crisis then you have felt the leadership of its board in action.
SIBA functions under the Carver Method. Board members attend a training session and three meetings per year. They are not paid for service but expenses are reimbursed.
Do you have or know someone with the leadership skills SIBA needs?

From the first paragraph, I felt drawn into this world- I was pulled parallel alongside the descriptions of the house in which the story is set. It felt like falling down a spiraling hole in the floor. --Aimee Keeble, Main Street Books in
Davidson, NC
This is so sinuously addictive you will find yourself tied in knots trying to figure out what is happening. It's the story of two sisters growing up in a house of rooms with different stories attached to the games the sisters play,
stories that later take on a life of their own years later as buried memories come to the fore. Tricky good! -- Pete Mock, McIntyre's Fine Books,
Pittsboro, NC
Mirrorland is a modern day Gothic where every page brings a new surprise. A surprise which will have you wondering what is real and what isn’t in this unusual, scary and surprisingly atmospheric novel. --Nancy McFarlane,
Fiction Addiction in Greenville, SC
This fast-moving and well-written book tells the story of three girls, and how they dealt with the three boys in their lives (one’s twin brother, one’s ex-boyfriend, and one’s crush). After the boys die in a freak
plane accident where they were the pilots, the girls work together to figure out what really happened. This book also dives into the deeper themes of the pressures put on high school students when it comes to grades and athletics,
mental health, and the social image that a student is trying to uphold.
The Sky Above Us by Natalie Lund (List Price: $18.99, Philomel Books, 9780525518037, 4/13/2021) Reviewed by Angie Tally, The Country Bookshop in
Southern Pines, North Carolina
A fantastic new novel from an incredible writer. I loved every moment of Creatures of Passage and was hooked from the first page. Full of myth and mysticism, this is a complex web of stories that intersect in a way that
slowly and gracefully unfolds. Complicated family relationships, systemic poverty and privilege, the transformative destruction of abuse, all of these themes and more create a beautiful and tragic look at the Anacostia neighborhood
of DC.
Linda-Marie: Reading:Blackout by Dhonielle Clayton, Tiffany D. Jackson, et al, a YA collaboration “of swoony love stories between Black teenagers of different backgrounds, set against
the atmospheric backdrop of darkened New York neighborhoods," and Excuse Me While I Ugly Cry by Joya Goffney, a YA centered around a journal that gets into the wrong hands and results
in threats to reveal its secrets. But could this actually be a good thing? Listening: Joni Mitchell station on Pandora Watching: The Music of Strangers: Yo-Yo Ma and the Silk Road Ensemble, an absolutely beautiful and inspiring documentary.
SP: Reading: Back to reading The Snow Ball by Brigid Brophy. Listening: to my dogs bark. Watching:The Hot Heiress. A pre-Code musical comedy from 1931 with this incredible description: A riveter strikes a debutante's fancy when he chases a hot bolt into her bedroom.
Lucy: Reading:Crazy Stupid Bromance by Lyssa Kay Adams - Hilarious, swoony, and full of men trying to breakdown their internalized toxic masculinity. Oh, and there’s cats! Listening: Sense and Sensibility by Jane Austen - I’m super familiar with this story but have never actually read it until now. That being said, I’m hooked and thus devour this audiobook anytime
I’m able as it’s addictive and I must know the particulars! Watching: Zoey’s Extraordinary Playlist - I’ve loved this show since the very beginning, and it’s producing excellent episode after excellent episode this season. The music is great, sure, but
the beauty of this show lies in its characters, its exploration of what it means to be alive, and (arguably most importantly) what it means to care for each other while we’re here.
Nicki: Reading: The Source of Self Regard by Toni Morrison, who is so wise she seems like the Oracle at Delphi or something, Matrix by Lauren Groff, The Whisperers by Orlando Figes Listening:Akoe: Nuevas Musicas Antiguas from the Taracea ensemble. Watching: CNN, but only in brief 10-minute bits, which is about all I can stand.
