Mental Health Check In
Wednesday, June 16 at 1PM: Mental Health Check-in with Micro-Chillers, tools for managing stress and anxiety.
We know it’s stressful right now, especially as bookstores navigate Covid-related issues around masks, author events, and financial challenges. Bryan Robinson, Ph.D, known to many SIBA booksellers for leading us through a six
week #Bookseller Chill series during the onset of Covid, is stepping forward again to help us prioritize our mental health. In this session, he’ll walk booksellers through what he calls micro-chillers (exercises and meditations
to produce calm, clarity, and a number of other positive emotions). He’ll present some of the science behind the micro-chillers, lead us through a few examples, and take your questions on how to deal with stress, anxiety,
and overwork. Please join us!
Bryan Robinson, Ph.D.is a psychotherapist and Professor Emeritus at UNC Charlotte. He’s also the author of #Chill: Turn Off Your Job & Turn On Your Life, a guide to mindfulness that’s filled with exercises (micro-chillers),
meditations, and advice for achieving work/life balance. https://bryanrobinsonbooks.com

Galleys & Giveaways: Open Skies
Open Skies : My Life as Afghanistan's First Female Pilot by Niloofar Rahmani, Adam Sikes
On Sale Date: July 6, 2021 9781641603348, 1641603348 Hardcover
$28.99 USD, $38.99 CAD
Niloofar Rahmani was born in 1991 in Kabul, Afghanistan. During the rise of the Taliban, her father took his young family to Pakistan, where they lived for nine years as refugees. Then, after the 9/11 terrorist attacks and the international
coalition's invasion, the Rahmani family returned to their home in Kabul. In 2010, for the first time since the Soviets, Afghanistan allowed women to join the armed forces, and Niloofar entered Afghanistan's military academy. Niloofar
had to break through social barriers to demonstrate confidence, leadership, and decisiveness—essential qualities for a combat pilot.
Niloofar performed the first solo flight of her class—ahead of all her male classmates—and in 2013 became Afghanistan's first female fixed-wing air force pilot. Yet some Afghan soldiers refused to fly with her, while others disparaged
and harassed her. In 2014 the Taliban threatened Niloofar, her father lost his job, and extended family members disavowed them. The US State Department honored Niloofar with the International Women of Courage Award and sent her
to the United States to meet Michelle Obama and fly with the US Navy's Blue Angels. But when she returned to Kabul, the danger to her and her family had increased significantly, forcing them to move every few months. In 2015 the
US military brought Niloofar back to the US to learn to fly C-130s, but before graduation she learned she couldn't go home, and requested political asylum. She was granted US asylum in 2018, and her family is still in hiding.
No matter how committed to equity an orgnaization is, there are bound to be some unexamined policies or practices, or even workplace culture that are preventing the development of a truly inclusive, equitable environment. How often
do you assess your store's internal policies and practices for patterns of inequity that may be impeding your business's ability to grow?
Ingram offering Q&A Sessions Regarding Centralized Distribution
Last week's announcement that Ingram Publisher Services will centralize distribution in Jackson, TN has caused booksellers concern about shipping times, availability, and process flow. Ingram will be hosting two Q&A sessions every
Wednesday (10am & 2pm Pacific) in June to clarify how the move intends to increase stock availability and simplify ordering, as well as lowering requirements for free freight to 10 units and offering daily shipments.

Spotlight on:The Other Black Girl by Zakiya Dalila Harris
What booksellers are saying aboutThe Other Black Girl
Urgently of-the-moment, THE OTHER BLACK GIRL is the perfect blend of thriller, mystery and contemporary fiction. -- Jessica Nock from Main Street Books in Davidson, NC Buy from Main Street Books.
This is the tale of two Black women co-workers in the cutthroat publishing industry trying to determine if they are friends or enemies. A literary fiction tale with a side of suspense, this expertly woven critique on society is
bound to keep readers on the edge of their seats. --Lady Smith from The Snail on the Wall in Huntsville, AL Buy from Snail on the Wall
WOW WOW WOW. I cannot wait for the day to put this into people's hands. I think this will be a watershed book and I cannot wait to watch it unfold. --Olivia Gacka from Novel in Memphis, TN Buy from Novel
The Road Trip vividly tells the story of Addie and Dylan; they fell hard for each other and their relationship ended in horrible terms. Now somehow after not speaking to each other for awhile, they are stuck in a car together
for a long trip to a mutual friend’s wedding. Told from both of their perspectives and present and past tense, Beth O’Leary can somehow take a simple idea and make it deep, funny, endearing and entertaining.
Linda-Marie: Reading: Last Chance Books by Kelsey Rodkey, a YA romcom that’s reminiscent of “You’ve Got Mail” and filled with insidery bookseller humor. Listening: The Lovers’ Waltz Radio Station on Pandora. Watching: Binge-watched the last season of The Kominsky Method, which suffers from the lack of Alan Arkin but had me in tears by the end (no spoilers)!
Lucy: Reading:The Family Upstairs by Lisa Jewell - Richly detailed and full of suspense, this mysterious story is definitely one of those ones that has you sacrificing sleep for answers. Listening: Consider This from NPR Watching:Shadow and Bone - I have not read these books, but I really liked this show!
Nicki: Reading:The Anthropocene Reviewed by John Green (and now I am assigning five-star type reviews to random objects in my house), The Parted Earth by
Aanjali Enjeti Listening: The Code Switch podcast, and whoa! These are some tough, amazing conversations. Watching: Finally getting around to Arthur and George, season 1.
SP: Reading: Not enough reading lately! But... Listening: ...to Nathan Rateliff and Lucy Dacus and impatiently waiting for the next episode of the Cocaine & Rhinestones podcast. Watching: Summer usually gets me in a New Orleans mood, and since it is pretty much on 24 hours a day somewhere, I’ve had NCIS: New Orleans on in the background a lot. The NCIS part is nothing special,
but the show is actually shot in and around New Orleans and every episode is full of local musicians and someone is always cooking something I want to eat.
