Recent studies show that a switch towards plant-based diets is vital to avoid the worst impacts of climate change. To support our
planet’s environmental health, meals at SIBA-sponsored events, beginning with a gathering planned for October in Chapel Hill, NC, will feature a vegetarian menu as the primary option. Vegan, gluten-free,
and meat options will be available by special request. To reduce carbon footprint and support local farmers, SIBA will work with hotel and restaurant partners to locally source dairy, eggs, fruits, vegetables, fungi, and grains.
SIBA will request that BIPOC farmers and suppliers be given first consideration.

Best practices for handling an unruly customer: expressing a threat vs posing a threat
"Cancel culture" is a phrase that has become an accusation hurled almost indiscriminately when people find their basic assumptions challenged or criticized. "Call-out culture" and "cancel culture" are
inherently antagonistic, which is good for bringing attention to a problem, but not very useful in resolving it. Professor Loretta J. Ross of Smith College asks, "What if, instead of calling people out, we called them in?"
The antidote to the outrage that fuels the internet and the media, Professor Ross believes, is “calling in.” Calling in is like calling out, but done privately and with respect. “It’s a call out done with love”
Read more about Ross's "calling in" model of having difficult conversasions on hard subjects.

Zucchino appeared on the Reader Meet Writer series in January, shortly after his book was published in paperback. The book covers the events that lead up to, and the repercussions of what has been deemed the only successful coup in
American history -- The 1898 Race Massacre in Wilmington, North Carolina.
What booksellers have to say about Wilmington's Lie:
Rosemary Pugliese from Malaprop's in Asheville, NC: "This is truly a book to shake your world view. To know violence could occur so openly in the U.S., and be fairly hidden for decades, is to begin to face
how deeply ingrained racism is in our history - particularly in the South. Wilmington's Lie is a "must read," even as it sickens, shocks, and educates."
Samantha Flynn from Quail Ridge Books in Raleigh, NC: "Zucchino brings the high standards of journalistic excellence for which he is known to this exposé of the despicable events of 1898. While there is
much we may never know about that painful period, this book provides a long overdue insight into the "white supremacy" movement after Reconstruction, and the horrific treatment of black citizens by its proponents to achieve
their ends."
General RMW Event information:
RMW events are held on Tuesday and Thursday evenings at 7:00 PM Eastern
Each event is fully moderated and hosted, with plenty of time for author Q & A. Current host is Wiley Cash, author of When Ghosts Come Home (William Morrow, 2021)
All events are recorded and available to stream at SIBA's Reader Meet Writer TV YouTube channel.

What booksellers are saying about The Killing Hills
Part thriller, part hill country drama Chris Offutt spins a yarn of small town vendettas investigated by a native son called home from across the globe. Personal turmoil and family ties abound but the result is an atmospheric and
satisfying whodunit. -- Jamie Fiocco from Flyleaf Books in Chapel Hill, NC Buy from Flyleaf Books.
This was a blast! Hill country Kentucky noir with characters that both repulse and endear. A tough combo that works well with the plot of familial vengeance that piles up the bodies without understanding the cause that makes the
blood boil so hot. Superb. --Pete Mock from McIntyre's Books in Pittsboro, NC Buy from McIntyre's Fine Books
Even with a name like The Killing Hills and a body discovered in the first few pages, I still look back on the murder mystery as the book’s B Plot. Chris Offutt paints Appalachia brilliantly, --Ian McCord from Avid Bookshop
in Athens, GA Buy from Avid Bookshop
A dazzling and devastating look into the life of one of the most unique voices of modern lit. Read to learn how an Ogbanje navigates the highs and lows of success. You may have more in common with a god than you think. (would ‘spirit’
be a better substitute for ‘god’ here? I can’t recall if they refer to themselves as ‘god’ or ‘godly’ throughout) Emezi paints their world with a set of custom brushes. No matter the
angle of your view, the picture comes to life in this book. Although these letters are personal and specific, the messages relayed will resonate with a wide audience. The prose, as always, is visceral, raw, and unflinching.
The words center around heartbreak and personhood, destruction and growth. A sibling book to their astounding debut, Freshwater.

Linda-Marie: Reading:The Revisioners by Margaret Wilkerson Sexton. Beautifully written and powerful novel about intergenerational trauma, told through the eyes of the women who strive to overcome it, even
when the present continues to inflict pain and loss. Watching:Sweet Tooth. Very much enjoying this timely, post-pandemic fantasy storytelling. Listening: Celtic and Appalachian-inspired music on Pandora.
Lucy: Reading: For the Wolf by Hannah Whitten - “The Beauty and the Beast” meets “Little Red Riding Hood” in this moody medieval-esque fantasy full of lush descriptions and aching emotion. Listening:No Compromise from NPR - This podcast series on the “No Compromise” movement within the gun rights community just won a Pulitzer, and it is both informative and terrifying, but also has a wit
to it that’s much appreciated. Watching: Sweet Tooth on Netflix - I binge watched this show in one night and am very upset that there is not more. I admittedly didn’t read the comic when a friend gave it to me as it seemed rather dark
/ gruesome, but if that is actually the tone of the comics that does not carry over to the series (as much).
Nicki: Reading:The Hearing Trumpet by Leonora Carrington (I'm on a Carrington binge), and My Broken Language by Quiera Alegria Hudes which
is a real surprise and delight. Listening:Hope Amid Tears: Beethoven Cello Sonatas with Yo-Yo Ma and Emanuel Ax Watching: Whatever happens to be running on Masterpiece Theatre. There are vintage outfits and English accents and occasionally dead bodies.
SP:
Reading:The Letters of Sylvia Beach. Beach was the legendary owner of Shakespeare and Company, the equally legendary Parisian bookshop and Lost Generation literary and cultural center. She published Ulysses--when no
other publisher had the courage--and was proof that booksellers can change the world. Listening: The album Jubilee by Japanese Breakfast, aka Michelle Zauner, the author of Crying in H Mart.
Watching: Rewatching True Blood. It's sticky, squicky, squirmy, sexy, campy fun but it does make me nervous when I take the dog out at night.
