Feedback: How are we doing?

Nine days left.

Booksellers, please note that the July 31st deadline to order your holiday catalogs is a HARD DEADLINE, Because of printing and paper order requirements, no late store catalog orders can be accepted.

If you are signing up for the direct or saturation mail option, you should get your orders started now. It will take a little while to work out with RAMP what routes or zip codes you want your mailing to reach. Watch RAMP's recent session on Direct and Saturation Mail to help you decide what kind of investment would most benefit your store.

NVNR: Introducing the Studio Gallery & Bookstore Row

NVNR: The Studio Gallery & Bookstore Row
A different approach to networking at a virtual conference

In order to foster connections between booksellers, publishers, and vendors, New Voices New Rooms has just launched two highly interactive directories we are calling "The Studio Gallery" (Publishers & Vendors) and "Bookstore Row" (Bookstores, obviously).

The Studio Gallery and Bookstore Row are designed as detailed directories which can be filtered, sorted, searched, and downloaded, and which contain detailed company information and resources that are most useful to bookstores and the publisher/vendor partners of NVNR.

In The Studio Gallery booksellers can find:

  • Contact info for their sales rep
  • Instructions for setting up appointments during and outside of the show
  • Detailed show specials
  • Links to instructions for setting up a new account
  • Links to event grids, downloadable catalogs and other downloadable resources
  • Links to edelweiss collections and product images.
  • Links to offsite resources, websites, and videos
  • Information about sponsored events and author appearances in the schedule

On Bookstore Row, booksellers and partnering publishers and vendors can find:

  • Store contact information, website links, and social media accounts
  • Store descriptions, including any special focus the store has
  • Staff contact information for buyers, event managers, and other specialized staff positions
  • Links to downloadable and online press kits
  • A gallery of store photos

The Studio Gallery & Bookstore Row are open to NVNR attendees only, and will remain available through the end of the year.

Reader Meet Writer: The Lost Art of Dying

Last week's Reader Meet Writer event with Lydia Dugdale was fascinating and thought-provoking.

Reader Meet Writer

The Anti-Racist Bookseller

The Anti-Racist BooksellerConsent-Based Governance & Collaborative Networks
(A tool from Day 16 of The 21-Day Racial Equity Challenge)

Independent bookstores regard community outreach, partnership, and collaboration as vital to their business model and identity as a valuable member of their own community. When you are partnering with other organizations, even if you all have the same goals and the same dedication to equity and justice, it is inevitable that there will be conflicts on how to go forward, how to get there from here. Consent-based Governance is a powerful tool for bridging differences, creating solutions, and still maintaining a commitment to equity.

How decisions get made, and who participates in those decisions, is a key indicator for equity.  Consent-based governance offers to groups who want to integrate the wisdom and power of diverse people to shape their work together. --Circle Forward

LAST WEEK'S BOOK BUZZ:

Spotlight on: A Psalm for the Wild-Built by Becky Chambers Psalm for the Wild-Built

What booksellers are saying about A Psalm for the Wild-Built

  • This novella was WONDERFUL! It was just what I needed this weekend; engaging but comforting. I cried at the end; it was the release I didn't know I needed. -- Shannan Malone from The Snail on the Wall in Huntsville, AL
Buy from The Snail on the Wall

  • Part hilarious odd-couple road-trip, part soulful parable for a lost and battered world, A Psalm for the Wild-Built brings all the warmth, comfort, and elusive wisdom of a warm mug of tea poured by someone who loves you. Take a deep breath, relax your shoulders, and drink it all in.. --Megan Bell from Underground Books in Carrollton, GA
    Buy from Underground Books

  • I think the world would be a better place if everyone read this book. --Abby Rice from Foggy Pine Books in Boone, NC
    Buy from Foggy Pine Books

  • I love love love this book. It's like Becky Chambers expanded the conversation between the whale and the petunias hitchhikers guide to the galaxy but added 100% more robots. --Katie Brown from Malaprop's in Asheville, NC
    Buy from Malaprop's Bookstore/Cafe

What We're Reading (and more) @ SIBA

Linda-Marie:
Reading: The Final Girls Support Group by Grady Hendrix. Creepy, funny, and often terrifying; might be too anxiety-provoking to finish.
Listening: The comforting sounds of birds, frogs, insects, and humans filtering through my office window.
Watching: Rosemary & Thyme, a British television cozy mystery series in which the detectives are gardeners .

Lucy:
Reading: Before She Was Helen by Caroline B. Cooney - This mystery was admittedly slow to start, but once it got going I was completely absorbed by it. Cooney kept her narrative’s tension taut by skillfully weaving numerous character perspectives together, and by also jumping back and forth in time in a way that never revealed too much too fast. That being said, this story was a hard read for me, as sexual assault features heavily in the narrative, and Cooney’s articulation of so much of this story, while excellently wrought, is admittedly hard to navigate.
Listening: The backlist of the 99% Invisible podcast.
Watching: Ted Lasso - I’m rewatching this with a friend of mine, and it’s just as good the second time through!

Nicki:
Reading: The Love Songs of W.E.B. Du Bois by Honoree Fanonne Jeffers, Psalm for the Wild-Built by Becky Chambers, which has lured me back into science fiction, and Once I Was You by Maria Hinojosa. Last week's Code Switch Podcast pushed me to pick this one up.
Listening:  The Code Switch podcast. July's episodes have all been about Freedom and Books, which has been hell on my book budget.
Watching: Season 6 of Bosch.

SP:
ReadingA Psalm for the Wild-Built / Becky Chambers. Thanks to a review from a Southern bookseller in, uhhh, The Southern Bookseller Review and a heads up from the editor of said review. It's the first book in the author's new Monk & Robot series. Monks and robots. Really, what more do you need to know?
WatchingFor All Mankind. Fantastic alt-history premise, great cast, gorgeous production values.
Listening: Perfume Genius / Set My Heart on Fire Immediately. I recommend headphones on, rainy night, preferably while reading a book about monks and robots.
