E.R. manages the programming, fiscal, and daily operations of Charis Circle. When not running around Charis, E.R. loves reading, writing, taking care of his dogs, playing in the woods, and learning about classic cars and trucks.

Julia DavisJulia R. Davis

Julia Davis took ownership of The Book Worm Bookstore, Powder Springs, GA in November 2020 when the former owner retired. Ms. Davis’ passion for promoting self-love and literacy has become the foundation that The Book Worm stands on.  Julia also hosts a series of children’s events, appropriately titled “I Love ME!” designed to encourage children to love themselves as they are. In February 2014, Ms. Davis published her first children’s book “I Love me because….I’m DIFFERENT.” Currently, there are EIGHT published picture books ONE Chapter Book, and various self-love items in the continually growing I LOVE ME! Book Series.

Janet GeddisJanet Geddis

Janet Geddis (she/her) is a business owner, writer, speaker, and community leader. The owner of Avid Bookshop in Athens, Georgia, Janet is involved with regional and national book industry organizations, presenting at least twice a year at conferences and volunteering her time for advisory boards. She began her first term on the SIBA Board in 2018. Known for her inventiveness (she was the first bookstore owner to use crowdfunding to gather some startup funds in 2010!) and positivity, Janet volunteers in Athens and in the book world whenever possible. Recently she and Avid were featured in a WebMD film, a Facebook video series, and even a one-on-one interview with Stacey Abrams. She is a contributor to podcasts and radio programs, including shows on Georgia Public Broadcasting and NPR.

Candice HuberCandice Huber

Candice Huber (they/them) is a sixth-generation New Orleanian who owns New Orleans’ only queer-owned and genre focused bookstore, Tubby & Coo’s Mid-City Book Shop, named after their grandparents. They established TALES Publishing in 2018, which has thus far published three books. They are also a writing, editing, publishing, and virtual event consultant and host The Writers’ Forum on WRBH Reading Radio, focusing on interviewing science fiction and fantasy authors. Candice serves on the Diversity, Equity, & Inclusion Committee and the Science Fiction & Fantasy Task Force for the American Booksellers Association and is helping to develop the Store Operations module for the new Bookseller Certification program. They are an avid genre fiction reader, board game player, and nerd.

Doloris VestDoloris Vest

Doloris Vest (she/her) is co-owner (with husband Craig Coker) of Book No Further, located in Roanoke, VA. The store opened in 2017 and relocated to a larger store in 2019. Book No Further offers new and gently used books, and features the work of local and regional fiction and non-fiction authors. After working in journalism and public relations Doloris spent 20-plus years in corporate marketing and non-profit management. Her stint as executive director for the Botetourt Chamber of Commerce piqued her interest in owning her own business. Doloris has volunteered with a number of local non-profits and currently serves on the board of Blue Ridge Literacy.  She also writes for regional publications and maybe, one day, will finish one of the three novels she has underway.

The Anti-Racist Bookseller

The Anti-Racist BooksellerWhat is performative allyship?

It is an easy matter to "like" and "share" anti-racist social media posts to demonstrate solidarity, but if your social media activism is not reflected in your company's own internal policies you may be exploiting people instead of supporting them.

“Performative allies share their knowledge about inequity with others, but don’t use their privilege and resources to make real change,” says Xochitl Ledesma, Catalyst’s Director of Leading for Equity & Inclusion. (via)

LAST WEEK'S BOOK BUZZ:

Spotlight on: All the Little Hopes by Leah Weiss All the Little Hopes

What booksellers are saying about All the Little Hopes

  • As someone who was believed she was going to be a detective after reading Nancy Drew, I related to their quest for the perfect crime to solve. This is a beautiful coming of age story with just the right amount of mystery and heartache. -- Merry Quarles from Foxtale Book Shoppe in Woodstock, GA
    Buy from FoxTale Book Shoppe

  • I grew up reading Nancy Drew books and the impact it has on these girls lives is amazing. Do not miss this adventure into the past.. --Mandy Harris - Angel Wings Bookstore
    Buy from Angel Wings Bookstore

  • Filled with many interesting characters, All the Little Hopes is a wonderful story of a family’s love and hope for each other and their daily hopes and prayers that their loved ones and neighbors will make it home from the war. --Mary Patterson from The Little Bookshop in Midlothian, VA
    Buy from The Little Bookshop

  • Pure working-people’s south and heart and grit, with a dash of WW2 and Nancy Drew. I loved the two girls (especially Bert) and the Brown family, and several other characters pulled into the story. I didn’t want the story to end! — Cathy Graham from Copperfish Books in Punta Gorda, FL

SpinMade in China by Anna Qu
On Edelweiss | Buy

A young Chinese immigrant calls Child Services on her mother. Like the threads whirling through her mother and stepfather’s New York City sweatshop where she was forced to work as a girl, Anna Qu’s debut memoir is full of the fragments of a traumatic childhood and the challenges of piecing together the truth—about trauma and the generational pattern of cruelty, about immigration and identity, labor and self-worth, and ultimately, the love we deserve, awaiting us.

What We're Reading (and more) @ SIBA

Linda-Marie:
Reading: Terciel & Elinor by Garth Nix, a wonderful step back into the dangerous, magical world of the Old Kingdom, in this prequel to Sabriel.
Listening: British Folk Music station on Pandora.
Watching:
Continuing to enjoy The Heart Doctor on Acorn, and feeling wistful about late summer’s arrival in the natural world when I go on my daily walks.

Lucy:
Reading: The Devil and the Heiress by Harper St. George - Violet and Christian’s journey (literally and figuratively) was thrilling to go on, and I appreciate the way St. George wove their relationship together so as to make their love, their fight, and their reconciliation feel honest to who they were.
Listening: To a fun Tik Tok sound by Kathy Ellen Davis that some of you have used in videos this last week! They’re all super cute, and I can’t wait to hear said sound more as it spreads through the book world!
Watching: My cats mess up my rug even though I FINALLY bought rug grip for it…

Nicki:
Reading: Strange Beasts of China by Yan Ge, a mesmerizing story that asks us if there really is a difference between "human" and "monster," Radical Vision, a Biography of Lorraine Hansberry by Sonica Diggs Colbert, which shows us a writer whose impact went far beyond the theater, and Beatrix Potter by Linda Lear, because my mother told me she loved it.
Listening: Richter: Exiles with the Baltic Sea Philharmonic & Kristjan Jarvi, which is not exactly easy or peaceful to take in.
Watching: Nada. Seriously. I turned off the television this week.

SP:
Reading: My horoscope, which this week included this sentence: "Your library of self-wisdom always deserves a robust card catalog system."
Listening: This is the week for a new Cocaine & Rhinestones podcast episode and since it was all about Tammy Wynette, you really can't go wrong with her 1968 album Stand By Your Man. Musically, at any rate.
WatchingDazed and Confused (1993). One of those movies I can't not watch and which gets better every time I don't not watch it.
