COVID Resources Recap

Southern states are being hit especially hard by the resurgence of the COVID Delta Variant amid the pressure to return the economy and community to something like a normal state. Stores now find themselves navigating a careful path between re-opening plans and stricter safety procedures.

Visit the ABA's Collection of Resources for Booksellers for up to date information on what to do if you are faced with a an outbreak in your community or --perish the thought -- your store. They also have a list of Resources for Reopening which will help you to operate safely when you start allowing customers back into your shop.

NVNR 2021: Galley Room Now Open

NVNR2021Free Books, Free Stuff: Why Booksellers should register now for NVNR 2021

Following Tuesday's orientation session for booksellers, New Voices New Rooms has opened its website hub to all registered attendees of NVNR2021.

Bookstores are strongly encouraged to have their entire staff register for the show by September 1st -- the deadline for attendees to receive the popular "Show Box" of goodies: tote bags, books, journals, chocolate, and so, so much more!

NVNR events will be held on the Zoom platform. But the website hub will be a companion resource for attendees, with easy to use directories of bookstores, publishers, vendors, and presenters. Booksellers can use the hub to schedule meetings with publishers and sales reps, keep track of scheduled events, download information about authors, showcase their own stores, and request review copies from participating publishers.

Now available at NVNR (Registered Attendees Only!):

Schedule: Updated as events and presenters are confirmed. New this year is the Hospitality Suite, staffed from 8 am to 5 pm every day of the show, and available for impromptu get togethers with colleagues.

Bookstore Row: A directory and showcase of attending bookstores, with contact information, press kits, and a list of staff names and positions.

Publisher & Vendor Studio Gallery: A directory of publisher and vendor partners with sales rep contact information, backlist order specials, appointment links, catalogs and key titles, and directions for creating new accounts.

The Readers of the Last ARC Galley Room: Now open for booksellers to browse. Attendees can build a list of ARCs they are interested in. The room will remain open until the end of the show, after which all ARC requests will be sent to publishers for fulfillment. The galley room is searchable and can be filtered by genre, author, publisher, and event which featured the book, if applicable. NVNR has also opened up the galley room to all publishers in the studio gallery, allowing for an extensive list of books beyond those featured in the NVNR program.

The Anti-Racist Bookseller

The Anti-Racist BooksellerHappy Holidays

Raise your hand if your store sends out "Happy Holidays" or "Happy New Year" or other holiday-related social media posts to your customers.

Cultures Connecting, the Diversity, Equity and Inclusion training service used by SIBA and the American Booksellers Association, has recently added a 2021-2022 Diversity Calendar to their list of resources for people doing culturally relevant anti-bias work.

The calendar seeks "to increase awareness and understanding of the diverse cultures represented in our schools and community." and is especially useful in that it notes things that may impact your staff and customers -- such as whether or not holiday observance means people may need the day off from work, or that children may not go to school on that day.

Sending out non-promotional, celebratory messages like "Happy Valentine's Day" or "Happy Independence Day" is a natural impulse, a way to connect with your community around a common celebration. Since communities are always far more diverse and complex than can be implied by a list of Federal or Bank holidays, the 2021-2022 Diversity Calendar is a excellent tool to find more points of connection with your customers, and more ways to celebrate with them.

LAST WEEK'S BOOK BUZZ:

Spotlight on: Velvet Was the Night by Silvia Moreno-Garcia All the Little Hopes

What booksellers are saying about Velvet Was the Night

  • A smoky, simmering historical noir following a romance-comic-reading secretary and a lonely henchman, as each becomes ensnared in a search for a missing photographer, set in 1970s Mexico City during the Dirty War. I enjoyed unlikely heroes, the historical context, and the soundtrack of suppressed rock music scoring the scenes throughout. -- Megan Bell from Underground Books in Carrollton, GA
    Buy from Underground Books

  • I have issues with Moreno-Garcia's books because I never want them to end! Readers will escape and find joy in Velvet Was the Night due to the action, the loneliness of both characters, and the beautiful setting of Mexico City. --Deanna Bailey from Story on the Square in McDonough, GA
Buy from Story on the Square

  • A smooth, amber-tinted, cigar-scented affair that rings in your ears. Corruption and a desperation to escape the world around you as it slowly unravels. It's the perfect read for a hot summer evening, where the world is moving slowly, and the cicadas are screaming. --Caitlyn Vanorder from Bookmarks in Winston-Salem, NC

How Moon Fuentez Fell in Love with the Universe by Raquel Vasquez GillilandHow Moon Fuentez Fell in Love with the Universe by Raquel Vasquez Gilliland
On Edelweiss | Buy

Raquel Vasquez Gilliland has written another YA novel that gets to the root of things and unearths the magic that was always there, waiting for us: this is her special power. Where Sia Martinez’s story brought us new worlds, Moon Fuentez’s story powerfully dissects our current one; the everyday magic of fireweed, moths, dragonflies, mulberries, and salt burst off the page in Vasquez Gilliland’s kaleidoscopic prose. How Moon Fuentez Fell in Love with the Universe is also a story of sisterhood and grief, of trauma and religion, of abuse and mental health, but at its heart lives a romance of epic proportion. Moon Fuentez is the beautiful, artistic, fat, witchy Latinx heroine that we all need and I adore her gorgeous love story.

What We're Reading (and more) @ SIBA

Linda-Marie:
Reading: Just finished Rayne & Delilah’s Midnite Matinee by Jeff Zentner, and it was brilliant and funny and moving from start to finish. Beginning A Good Neighborhood by Therese Anne Fowler for my book club.
Listening: William Ackerman Radio on Pandora.
Watching: The Heart Doctor on Acorn, an Australian show that always brings a smile and some reflection on the importance of family and good friends.

Lucy:
Reading: The Last Flight by Julie Clark - Definitely not helping my back of mind fear of plane crashes, but I love how this winding thriller both hits the ground running, yet also slowly unspools its narrative.
Listening: Don’t Call it a Cult by Sarah Berman - If you’re at all interested in cults and their dynamics, this is the book for you. Though be forewarned, it’s full of distressing content.
Watching: The Good Doctor via Hulu - I fell a bit behind on this show due to a spoiler I inadvertently received via social media that angered me, but I’m glad I finally picked this back up again.

Nicki:
Reading: Velvet Was the Night by Silvia Moreno-Garcia, smoky, gritty, 1970s Mexico-City noir. It doesn't get any better than that. Not a Nation of Immigrants by Roxanne Dunbar-Ortiz, a relentlessly clear-eyed look at what it really means when we call America "the land of opportunity." And I've just ordered Selina Hastings' new biography, Sybille Bedford, An Appetite for Life, because, wow, what a life!
Listening: Mother Nature from Angelique Kidjo.
Watching: Total comfort telly: Much Ado About Nothing with Emma Thompson and a bunch of other guys.

SP:
Reading: I'm not usually a fan of what is apparently an entire genre of Pride & Prejudice reimaginings, though I loved Jo Baker's Longbourn. Meg Greeley's The Heiress--the untold story of Anne, the sickly daughter of the fearsome Lady Catherine de Bourgh--belongs with Longbourn. If a mashup of Pride & PrejudiceRebeccaGentleman Jack, and Intervention sounds fun, then this is your book.
Listening: John Cale's ravishing album Paris 1919 (1973).
Watching: If the only thing you know about Gloria Grahame is her performance of "I Cain't Say No" in Oklahoma!, you should rectify that ASAP with her noir classics In a Lonely Place and The Big Heat.
