Feedback: How are we doing?

Be safe. We are with you.

At SIBA, we’re thinking constantly about our friends and colleagues who were affected by Hurricane Ida. If you have been impacted by the storm, there is assistance available from the Book Industry Charitable Foundation (Binc). Please don’t hesitate to ask for help: https://www.bincfoundation.org/assistance/#assistance-form. For those of you who would like to help, you can donate to Binc. Your assistance will be deeply appreciated. https://www.bincfoundation.org/donate/.

We have learned that FEMA is interested in gathering information about the status and actions of businesses and industry partners along the Gulf Coast associated with Hurricane Ida. Any situational awareness or information that can be shared regarding business operating status / response / recovery activities will assist FEMA with informing leadership to help shape overall response and recovery operations. Please send any updates, responses or questions that you may have to NBEOC@fema.dhs.gov .

NOLA Bookstores recently checked in with Shelf Awareness. SIBA would also love to hear from you, if you have a spare moment to check in. We’re here to help however we can.

Struggling to Learn

Struggling to Learn : An Intimate History of School Desegregation in South Carolina
by June M Thomas
USC Press | January 12, 2022
9781643362595 Hardcover
$29.99 USD
Education / History
History / United States / State & Local / South
Social Science / Discrimination

In 1964 June Manning Thomas became one of the first thirteen Black students to desegregate Orangeburg High School in South Carolina. This extraordinary experience shaped her life and spurred in her a passion to understand racism and its effect on education in the Black community. In Struggling to Learn, Thomas details the personal trauma she and her Black classmates experienced during desegregation, the great difficulties Black communities have faced gaining access to K–12 and higher education, and the social and political tools Black southerners used to combat segregation and claim belonging. Combining meticulous research and poignant personal narrative, this provocative true story reveals the long and painful struggle for equal education in the Jim Crow South. This is a story of constructive resilience—the fighting spirit of an oppressed people to ensure a better life for themselves and their children.

June Manning Thomas is the Mary Frances Berry Distinguished University Professor Emerita of Urban Planning at the University of Michigan.

The Anti-Racist Bookseller

The Anti-Racist BooksellerYou can't retrofit diversity

"The workplace is a key front line in the battle against systemic racism and economic inequality. We’re woefully far from achieving a truly equitable workplace, where everyone has the same access to the support and resources needed to thrive and where broader society is reflected throughout our organizations."

Sheela Subramanian, Senior Director, Future Forum by Slack, and Tina Gilbert, Managing Director, Management Leadership for Tomorrow (MLT) issue a call for a radical new approach to workplace diversity that starts with re-imagining and re-designing the work "place" itself. Noting that the pandemic has highlighted the benefits of flexible and workspaces and minimized encounters and exposure Black and minority workers face in a traditional workspace environment:

"Hybrid and flexible working arrangements create the setting for these more positive working environments to exist and for an employee’s sense of belonging to increase. Workplace changes alone won’t solve all of the equity issues in our processes and systems. Our research shows, however, that for Black knowledge workers it can significantly improve satisfaction."

A new era of workplace inclusion: moving from retrofit to redesign

LAST WEEK'S BOOK BUZZ:

Spotlight on:The Night She Disappeared by Lisa Jewell Fault Lines

What booksellers are saying about The Night She Disappeared

  • This is going to be one of my favorite thrillers of the year. This book kept me up and creeped me out in the best way and kept me guessing until the last chapter. -- Josie Greenwald from Bookmarks in Winston-Salem, NC

  • In The Night She Disappeared, Jewell has once again woven a twisty, intriguing mystery that will keep you up long past your bedtime! --Jennifer Jones from Bookmiser, Inc. in Marietta, GA
    Buy from Bookmiser

  • The less you know about this book going in the better, but the writing was topnotch and the multiple points of view were distinct from one another and interesting. I particularly loved the perspective of the missing teenage victim, Tallulah; she was deeply flawed but also sympathetic as she gets involved with people more manipulative and crafty than she is. For readers who like an atmospheric, slow-burn mystery. --Whitney Sheppard from The Snail on the Wall in Huntsville, AL

How Moon Fuentez Fell in Love with the Universe by Raquel Vasquez GillilandBoogie Boogie, Y’all by C. G. Esperanza
On Edelweiss | Buy

Art is all around us. In the sky, the trees, the faces of our neighbors, and also sometimes in the graffiti sprayed on buildings, trains, and streets. The art world was changed forever by graffiti artists Basquiat and others and graffiti artists were masters of appreciating the beauty and joy all around us. This original book is rhyme and poetry and beauty in motion and is the perfect family read-together.

What We're Reading (and more) @ SIBA

Linda-Marie:
Reading: rereading A Good Neighborhood by Therese Anne Fowler, in preparation for my book club next week. This powerful, unsettling and ultimately enraging novel is set in a NC neighborhood similar to my own (which added to inner drama as a reader) and addresses racism, classism, and environmentalism. Perfect read for a book club discussion.
Listening: Rainy Cafe with Cozy Jazz - Relaxing Elegant Instrumental Jazz for Work, Study, Focus and Chill station on Youtube.
Watching: West Wing, because we want to revisit another era and also watch some cracking good acting and screenwriting.

Lucy:
Reading: It Had to Be You by Georgia Clark -  This book is sparkling and beautiful! I highly recommend it to anyone who loves love!
Listening: By the Book - Two women live by a different self-help book every two weeks and then talk about their experiences doing so. It’s funny and often bears good advice.
Watching: Pretty Woman - I must have seen this movie dozens of times, but I love it each and every time I watch it.

Nicki:
Reading: Sybille Bedford: An Appetite for Life, Selina Hasting -- So, so gossipy! Did anyone from that generation ever sleep in their own bed? Women of Troy, Pat Barker, who is one of my "grab it while the ink is still wet" authors.
Listening: There is a new VOCES8 album, always a happy thing. Infinity, worth it for the very first track, "By Night."
Watching: the 2018 production of Colette, with Keira Knightly, which is better than I expected.

SP:
Reading:
Not a good book reading week, however I'm excited about choosing what's next from the pile. The leading contender so far is Amanda Montell's Cultish: The Language of Fanaticism.
Listening: Bonnie Raitt's Give It Up.
Watching: This is where I confess that every morning while I eat breakfast, I watch an episode of Charmed and bask in the complete nonsense and mystifying fashion choices. It's a great way to start the day.
