Read This Next!

"Booksellers beat algorithms all day long. One thing an algorithm cannot do is read a book, think of you, and know it is your kind of book. This is something booksellers do all day long, and in their sleep. Through Read This! Books with Street Cred, we're bringing SIBA booksellers' thoughts about their favorite new books to readers in every indie store across the South."--Wanda Jewell, Executive Director, Southern Independent Booksellers Alliance

Beginning this spring, SIBA booksellers will have another tool for selling new releases they love: Read This Next! Books with Street Cred.

Building on the success of's Read This! Books with Street Cred, SIBA will offer seasonal collections featuring the hottest new releases hand-picked and hand-curated by member booksellers. SIBA booksellers will have access to downloadable shelf-talkers, a downloadable flyer of the seasonal collection, and links to hundreds of books in our Read This! archive. SIBA looks forward to providing printed shelf-talkers and flyers as we launch our Read This Next! Extended and Read This Next! Kids in Summer 2018.

Read ThisNext! complements SIBA's Okra Picks by drawing attention to new releases beyond our geographical borders, highlighting that southern booksellers read everything and everywhere, and are passionate about literature. Want a sneak peak? Visit Read This!

10-11:30       A Year of Bookstore Profitability Education Session from ABA
ABA will present a year-long calendar of effective steps that bookstores can implement — as well as key cost-saving programs — to boost sales and improve the bottom line. This session is applicable to all bookstore employees, and booksellers will be invited to join the conversation and share thoughts about initiatives they use to improve profitability each quarter.

11:30-1:15    ABA Bookseller Forum & Lunch
Booksellers will have the opportunity during the open forum segment to discuss any of their concerns related to ABA, the book industry in general, and other issues. The spring forum discussions are a critically important vehicle for ABA to gather feedback from members, and all are encouraged to come prepared to discuss their concerns.

1:15-2            Talking about Amazon and Localism in Your Community
An open discussion among booksellers on how to talk with your customers and others in your community in order to raise awareness of the impact on the local economy of purchasing from online and big box retailers. We'll share ways to engage customers, staff, elected officials and other small business owners in a positive, productive conversation on the benefits of buying local, and the true impact of Amazon's growing presence within our economy. Using studies from the Institute for Local Self-Reliance, Civic Economics, ABA - as well as others - we'll talk about ways to educate your community on the importance of supporting local businesses. Discussion to be moderated by former SIBA President and current ABA Vice President Jamie Fiocco, Flyleaf Books, Chapel Hill, NC, and Oren Teicher, ABA CEO.

Bookseller Benefits PackageSimply put, a peer review is booksellers helping booksellers. If you feel like there is room for improvement in your store (and who doesn't feel this way?), friendly fellow booksellers will visit your store, look at areas that are causing you concern, and offer constructive and confidential feedback.

Midtown Reader in Tallahassee, Florida, recently had a peer review session with Linda-Marie Barrett (SIBA) and Jill Hendrix (Fiction Addiction, Greenville, SC):

"Thanks to Linda-Marie Barrett, Jill Hendrix, and all of SIBA, Midtown Reader had an educational and enriching few days of learning more about our store and the community of independent booksellers that make our business possible! We were thrilled to have them last week and look forward to working with them again in the future." --Mallorie

Peer Reviews are intensive and entirely confidential. For more info, and to request a review (or to be a reviewer) click here.

Stores participating in the Banner-for-Dues program (aka "Circle of Sites" aka "Lady Banks Pick of the Week") should be aware that if your store site is converted to a secure site (that is, if your website now begins with "https") you may need to make a small update to your banner code for it to run properly. Contact if you have the SIBA banner installed, but can't see it on your website.
