An Interview with Doni Kay, Sales Representative for Penguin Young Readers

Posted By Linda-Marie Barrett, Wednesday, August 1, 2018

An Interview with Doni Kay, Sales Representative for Penguin Young Readers

NameDoni Kay

Employer: Penguin Young Readers

States in your territory: DC, VA, NC, SC, GA, FL

Number of years as a rep:16

Best part about being a rep: Visiting bookstores and meeting with my buyers.

What were you doing before you became a rep? I was the children’s buyer for Books & Books in Coral Gables. I also ran the bookfair operation and managed the kid’s room with Michelle Krinzman. Before that, I was a flight attendant with Air Florida back in the late 70’s!

What's the coolest thing/a great idea you've seen at one of your stores? I love the Goodnight, Moon room at Little Shop of Stories in Decatur, Georgia. It’s magical!

Do you see Edelweiss reviews from booksellers? Yes, I do. All the time. I encourage my buyers to make sure they praise the galleys they love in Edelweiss. Knowing that once a buyer has gone through the catalog and marked their order that they may not ever go back in, I tell them I will sit right there while they write a review, even if it is in the middle of our sales call.

Do you follow any stores especially closely on social media? What are they doing right? I follow many of my accounts on social media. In the last couple of years I have seen so many of them step up their game on social media, specifically Instagram. Many have assigned a specific employee to manage their social media accounts, which I think is a great idea. Also, at Penguin Young Readers, we make sure to send out Social Media ready assets that make it super easy for our accounts to post a picture or post a contest or pre-order campaign, without them needing to put it all together in their very limited amount of time. We would rather they are hand selling in the store, rather than trying to figure out how to post something. I am really impressed with a few of my newer stores, that have jumped right into social media.

What can a bookseller do to make a sales call more effective? I always hope that my buyers have gone through my Edelweiss mark up ahead of time and marked up their initial order, so that we can spend our time wisely…….fine tuning the order and making sure they have noticed some of the mark up notes that I have added, such as where the author lives or possibly something local that we can use as a selling tool.

Most memorable thing that’s happened during a sales call?

I can’t think of one most memorable thing, but probably my favorite thing is when my buyers gets called away for a few minutes and I get to be a bookstore staff member again…….doing what I love best……hand selling!

What’s one thing you wish bookstores would do, or do more often? I love feedback. I tell all of my buyers to write me a quick email or text me or call me and let me know any little thing that is happening in their store or with their customers, so that I can stay on top of trends in the marketplace. If a new employee is madly in love with one of my books and is hand selling it like crazy, I want to know, so that I can make sure to send galleys specifically to that staff member and be better able to target my mailings.

Favorite book you’re currently promoting: Picture book: Adrian Simcox Does NOT Have a Horse, (on sale in August 2018), Jackie Woodson’s new books……The Day You Begin and Harbor Me and Sheila Turnage’s finale to the Mo & Dale Mysteries which began with Three Times Lucky……The Law of Finders Keepers. Sooooo good!

What do you enjoy most about the SIBA Discovery Show? Seeing all my fellow reps and finding out what books they are excited about. Catching up with my customers and getting to know new-comers to the bookselling world. I really enjoy getting a chance to talk to some of the owners and buyers at some of the smaller accounts in my territory that I won’t necessarily see while on the road. It is a great way to build relationships and to personally show them the exciting books we have coming up!

Geek Out at the #SIBA18 Discovery Show! Sign up for an Escape Room Experience!

Geek Out at the #SIBA18 Discovery Show! Sign up for an Escape Room Experience!

After taking off in Asia, Western Europe, and the West Coast, escape rooms are popping up across the country. Will Shortz, the crossword puzzle editor for The New York Times, says it makes sense that escape experiences have become the puzzling trend of the moment. "If you were a brainy person 20 or 30 years ago, it was looked down upon. Nowadays, nerds have some of the biggest incomes in the U.S. and want to get together to geek out."  Now you have an opportunity to geek out at #SIBA18!

Escape rooms are real-life team-based puzzle games, where you are locked in a room and have to solve puzzles together to get out.  Once your team solves the mystery or reaches the end of the time limit, you're "set free.”

Escape rooms aren’t just problem-solving exercises. They’re fun and engaging, and encourage working together to crack codes, solve puzzles and follow clues. Studies have found that those who play games are better learners. Think what this could do for your team!

Want to sign up your team for an hour? Or get on the schedule to be part of a team? Contact wanda@sibaweb.com and get ready for some fun!

Binc and Macmillan Diversity Scholarship Returns: Nine scholarships will be awarded in 2018

Posted By Nicki Leone, Wednesday, May 23, 2018

Binc and Macmillan Diversity Scholarship Returns
Nine scholarships will be awarded in 2018

bincThe Macmillan Booksellers Professional Development Scholarship, a program sponsored by the Book Industry Charitable (Binc) Foundation and Macmillan Publishers to provide professional development to booksellers traditionally underrepresented within the industry, is returning for 2018. The application period will begin on June 1, 2018 and will end on July 1.

The program is intended to encourage a greater number of individuals from underrepresented groups to choose and/or continue careers in bookselling by offering up to a maximum of $500 for a bookseller from a traditionally underrepresented group to attend a regional trade show.

"We were delighted by the response to the scholarships last year and are so pleased to be able to offer them again in 2018. Judging by the responses we received from last year's participants, this is a worthwhile and rewarding program, which opens up a valuable experience to booksellers who would otherwise find it out of reach," said Macmillan Diversity & Inclusion Co-Chairs Monique Patterson, Editorial Director, St. Martin's Press and Angus Killick, VP, Associate Publisher, Macmillan Children's Publishing Group.

MacmillanEach scholarship will cover the cost of travel, lodging, and meals for one bookseller to attend their regional trade show. Nine scholarships are available – one for each regional independent bookseller association. To be eligible to apply for a scholarship, a bookseller must have worked in a bookstore as a regular full or part-time employee for a minimum of 90 days. The bookstore must be a member in good standing of one of the regional trade associations. The applicant will answer three brief essay questions and the winners will be selected by a panel composed of Binc board members, booksellers, bookstore owners, and publishers.

Binc Executive Director Pam French said the Foundation is excited to continue programming that strengthens the bookselling industry by providing support for the diverse booksellers already working hard to make their communities great.

"The Binc Foundation exists to help booksellers thrive," French said. "By working with Macmillan Publishers to bring diverse voices to regional trade shows, we're enriching conversations and improving the story of the bookselling industry."

Booksellers can find out more details and apply at https://bincfoundation.submittable.com/submit. Applications must be completed by July 1, 2018.

Eligibility:

  1. Applicants must fall into one of the following categories
    a.    People of color, defined as people of African/African American, Asian/Pacific Islander, Latin American, Middle Eastern, or Native American/Indigenous descent
    b.    People who identify as lesbian, gay, bisexual, transgender, or queer
    c.    People with disabilities (includes but is not limited to physical, sensory, cognitive, intellectual, or developmental disabilities, chronic conditions, and mental illnesses).
  2. Applicant's store must be a member of one of the regional IBA organizations.
  3. Applicant must be a regular part-time or full-time employee of the bookstore.
  4. Applicant must be currently employed and have 90 days of continuous employment with the bookstore.

Make Your Mark at #SIBA18! A Call for store-branded merchandise

Posted By Nicki Leone, Wednesday, May 2, 2018

Make Your Mark at #siba18!

Make your mark at #SIBA18!
A call for Bookstore Branded Bookmarks and Swag

The theme of this year's Discovery Show is "Mark Your Mark," with an emphasis on the many ways bookstores can brand themselves and become icons in their own communities and in the industry. To that end, SIBA is going to feature bookstore-branded merchandise in an exhibit at the show, and we'd like to incorporate your store-branded bookmarks into show materials.

So here's what we'd like to have from stores:

1) Store Bookmarks. These will be featured in the show directory in other show materials. Stores can provide either electronic files or actually send the printed bookmarks, or both. Electronic files should be sent to nicki@sibaweb.com. Any pdf or high resolution image format is fine. Print materials should be sent to:

Make Your Mark at SIBA
c/o Nicki Leone
718 Hughes Rd.
Hampstead, NC 28443

Malaprop's Mug2) Store Swag. SIBA will have a display of store-branded merchandise in the Exhibit hall during the show, so now is the time to let your store shine. If you are interested in having your store swag featured contact Linda-Marie at lindamarie@sibaweb.com. Bookmarks, coffee mugs, tote bags, t-shirts, bags of coffee, buttons, magnets, aprons, tea towels. . .the sky's the limit.

THE SITE VISIT (AKA, Nicki goes to VALSPAR)

Innisbrook ResortWhen Wanda Jewell told me that our annual site visit to the Innisbrook Resort in preparation for upcoming Discovery Show in September would be in March, she did warn me. "It will be during Valspar" she cautioned. I must have looked blank, because she added "the golf tournament." I shrugged and nodded. It was Florida. There would be golf, I thought.

It wasn't until we hit the traffic on US 19 and found ourselves behind a row of coach buses that I realized, oh it's a GOLF TOURNAMENT. I'm not a huge golf fan, but I still immediately called my dad. "Guess where I am!" I gloated. (Read more! || Register for #SIBA18)

How long you've been a bookseller: I've been a bookseller for 16 years. 10 years at Borders and 6 at Quail Ridge.

Best part about being a bookseller: . . .is the books! I get to buy and sell books for a living! And, of course, connecting with people through books.

Sadness is a White Bird Frankenstein in BaghdadThe Mars RoomThe Sea Beast Takes a Lover

Tony's Staff FavoritesBooks I'm reading:
I just finished Sadness is a White Bird by Moriel Rothman-Zecher. Almost finished The Sea Beast Takes a Lover by Michael Andreasen. In the middle of Frankenstein in Baghdad by Ahmed Saadawi. And just started The Mars Room by Rachel Kushner.

They are all wonderful and completely different from each other.

Spill Simmer Falter WitherFavorite handsell of 2017:
Spill Simmer Falter Wither by Sara Baume
So beautiful and beautifully written, devastatingly sad, but in a way that reminds you that you're alive.

Social Media Handles: I'm not on social media. I did Twitter for about 6 months, but made myself delete it.

Best thing we did this year at the store:
I'd have to say, the amazing people we hired this year. We have a wonderful staff, but this year in particular we added some incredible people with great experience in and out of bookselling

Top priority for 2018: Get the word out. Get all these amazing books in people's hands and brains.

And get people to realize that if they don't buy from us, we won't be around forever. Don't take your independent bookstore for granted.

Favorite SIBA programming benefit:
SIBA gave scholarships to two of our staff to go to New Orleans, which they raved about. I'd love to learn more about what SIBA does.

A non-golfer at the Valspar Championship. AKA, The Site Visit

Posted By Nicki Leone, Tuesday, March 13, 2018

Innisbrook ResortWhen Wanda Jewell told me that our annual site visit to the Innisbrook Resort in preparation for upcoming Discovery Show in September would be in March, she did warn me. "It will be during Valspar" she cautioned. I must have looked blank, because she added "the golf tournament." I shrugged and nodded. It was Florida. There would be golf, I thought.

Tiger Woods on the last day at ValsparIt wasn't until we hit the traffic on US 19 and found ourselves behind a row of coach buses that I realized, oh it's a GOLF TOURNAMENT. So my first introduction to the Innisbrook Resort was one of confused, milling excitement. Golf cart taxis and trams were zipping to and fro. Lines of people wearing sun visors and carrying beach bags and sun block stood at security check points, waiting to be, uh, wanded. Someone had created an exhibit of Tiny Houses near the walkway that led down to the 15th hole. Boy are they tiny. I think I'd need about six just for my books. Adults were walking around with martinis and mojitos in plastic cups. Kids were running around wearing straw hats and grasping paper fans stapled to wooden popsicle sticks.

I'm not a huge golf fan, but I still immediately called my dad. "Guess where I am!" I gloated.

Normally, a site visit means seeing the space "in action" on a normal day. This was hardly normal. Tiger Woods was on the premises, playing like he hadn't for the last five years. The enthusiasm was infectious. And oddly enough, I think being on site during a major event like Valspar was useful because we got a sort of "sky's the limit" view of the possibilities, and we got to see the resort staff really rise to every occasion.

So what do we have to look forward to in September?

Copperhead CourseWell, the place is beautiful.

That was abundantly clear despite the lines and the traffic and the security details. There are many lovely places to walk and it was not lost on me that the ospreys were nesting and not at all bothered by the crowds. I usually spend the week of the Discovery Show all but trapped in a hotel, so having so much open green space around me was addictive.

exhibit hall foyerThe exhibit hall is beautiful.

The foyer has a skylight the length of the building making it bright and welcoming. I think we're going to be putting the TRIO exhibit there. For exhibitors, loading in and out is going to be a dream. The loading docks are RIGHT THERE, and yet somehow invisible. No contending with creaky hotel elevators.

suiteThe rooms are really, really comfortable.

At Innisbrook, you have the choice between a "deluxe guestroom" and 1- and 2-bedroom suites. And I will say right now it is worth it to upgrade to the suite if you can. If you share with another person, or a couple people, they are less expensive per person than the guestroom, so this is the Discovery Show where you bring along family for a little vacation. And the suites come with a full kitchen: Fridge, stove, the works. When I come in September, I'm bringing my own coffee maker. No more trying to live off those little coffee pods hotels all have now!

There are something like five restaurants, three bars, a spa, and four or five pools on site.

Which is fortunate, because one thing about Innisbrook is that it is its own contained little world. Getting offsite takes some effort, and I am guessing most folks when they get there, are going to want to stay there. And speaking of food: It is, of course, very good. The menus are heavy on the seafood, naturally. So if you have special dietary concerns, be sure to let SIBA know when you register.

It looks like things are farther away than they really are.

It took me a little while to get used to the idea that all the program events would be a different building from where I was sleeping. Just out of curiosity, I tried to see how long it would take me to walk from my room to the exhibit hall, the building farthest away from where we were staying. At an amble it took me twelve minutes. With the tram service, it will take less time than an elevator ride. In fact, the hotel liaison told us they actually test their tram schedules against elevators in other hotels to make sure they have their times beat. "Think of the trams like a horizontal elevator" she said. Horizontal elevators with sunshine and fresh air!
