Indie Bookstores' "Go The Distance" Social Media Campaign

SIBA is hoping to test and share the kind of aspirational content we think might serve our communities virtually. It's a a good time to uniformly share a message we can all agree on. It's a challenge, but we're going the distance while we socially distance.

We are really excited that a few bookstores were able to contribute to this short video we put together to share throughout social media. Snail On The Wall, Bookmarks, E. Shaver, Story on the Square, Copperfish Books and Hub City Bookshop all shared some short video of the new "day-in-the-life" of bookstore operations.

Downloading the video is easy! You can preview and download the video in social media friendly formats here:

  • "SIBA_Main" is for Twitter and Facebook posting
  • "SIBA_Square" is for grid on Instagram posting
  • "SIBA_Vertical" is for Instagram Stories posting

Our plan is to share the video on Facebook, Instagram and Twitter at 2:00 PM EDT on Friday, May 15, and we're planning to amplify this positive message by providing all member bookstores with the file to share at the same time. We want to highlight just how resourceful and flexible indie bookstores are. The more everyone posts this, the more this will be seen by publishers, authors, and loyal customers; put smiles on their faces; and remind them that indie bookstores are here for them.

THIS! Thursday Inspiration with SIBA is SIBA's new informal virtual club on Thursday afternoons at 1 pm, where booksellers share things that are working for them. Less formal than a webinar, the program encourages conversation and the exchange of good ideas. Last Thursday's inaugural program featured Shari Stauch from Main Street Reads in Summervile, South Carolina, who demonstrated how she uses the social media tracking and scheduling service Metricool to manage her social media presence and grow her audience. Celebrate the Importance of Independent Bookstores on Amazon’s Prime Day

San Francisco’s Green Apple Books has created social media posts to bring attention to the value of indie bookstores on Amazon’s Prime Day, which begins Monday, July 15. Green Apple is encouraging all indie bookstores to make use of the posts, customizing with store photos that reflect the importance of shopping local and supporting community. 

  • “On this #PrimeDay, remember that Amazon won’t bring scores of authors to your community for FREE events each year. #ShopLocal” (with a photo from an event or of a famous author at the store)

  • “On this #PrimeDay, remember that Amazon won’t entertain your kids with a FREE drag queen story hour. #ShopLocal” (with a photo from recent event)

  • “On this #PrimeDay, remember that you can’t get engaged to your fellow booklover at Amazon. #ShopLocal” (with a photo of a couple that recently got engaged at the store)

SIBA's Collective Clout is Bustin' Out!

Over 80% of SIBA’s bookstore members report to the New York Times Bestseller List, review books on Edelweiss, submitting to IndieNext, publishers, and SIBA plus maintain an extensive local media list. Over 90% report to the ABA Indie Bestseller List.

Combined our southern bookstores support over 1100 book clubs across the south reaching thousands of southern readers. The themes for these book clubs run the gamut and include:  Adult, Children, YA, YA for adults, Signed 1st Edition Clubs, Teen, Black Feminist Fiction, Sci Fi, Political, Mystery, Classic, Literary Fiction, Historical Fiction, International Literature, Women’s Voices, “Monday Morning”, Romance, Spanish, Small Press, Social Justice and many more.

SIBA stores combined have over 500,000 Facebook friends, over 300,000 Instagram, and over 200,000 Twitter followers.  In addition, SIBA and her stores email nearly 500,000 readers regularly. SIBA’s social network reach is 22,000 on Facebook, 5000 on Twitter, and 1000 on Instagram making the total reach of SIBA and her stores well over one million!

Over 60% of SIBA bookstores attend the SIBA Discovery Show sending more and more booksellers every year increasing attendance by 10% on average since 2014.

We can carry this momentum forward into the future and imagine a day where we determine to send a message out to our million+ southern readers!
