Indie Bookstores' "Go The Distance" Social Media Campaign

Posted By Douglas Calhoun, Social Media and Marketing Intern at SIBA, Wednesday, May 13, 2020

SIBA is hoping to test and share the kind of aspirational content we think might serve our communities virtually. It's a a good time to uniformly share a message we can all agree on. It's a challenge, but we're going the distance while we socially distance.

We are really excited that a few bookstores were able to contribute to this short video we put together to share throughout social media. Snail On The Wall, Bookmarks, E. Shaver, Story on the Square, Copperfish Books and Hub City Bookshop all shared some short video of the new "day-in-the-life" of bookstore operations.

Downloading the video is easy! You can preview and download the video in social media friendly formats here:

  • "SIBA_Main" is for Twitter and Facebook posting
  • "SIBA_Square" is for grid on Instagram posting
  • "SIBA_Vertical" is for Instagram Stories posting

Our plan is to share the video on Facebook, Instagram and Twitter at 2:00 PM EDT on Friday, May 15, and we're planning to amplify this positive message by providing all member bookstores with the file to share at the same time. We want to highlight just how resourceful and flexible indie bookstores are. The more everyone posts this, the more this will be seen by publishers, authors, and loyal customers; put smiles on their faces; and remind them that indie bookstores are here for them.

indie books stores go the distance

Here is the ask:

Post the video to your Instagram stories and grid on Friday at 2:00 PM EDT. Find a suggested caption for underneath your Instagram post here (copy and paste, it's easy!):

Southern Indie Bookstores go the distance. Follow @siba_books to hear about ways to support, collaborate, and partner with the bookstore community and check out what @storyonthesquare @hubcitywriters @copperfishbooks @e.shaver_bookseller and @snailbooks are doing to ensure customers safely receive books. #gothedistance #SIBA20 #indiebookstores

We'll post the video at 2:00 PM EDT on Friday and you can simply share it from there. When you share we encourage you to write:

Southern Indie Bookstores go the distance. #gothedistance #SIBA20 #indiebookstores

Post video to your Twitter account on Friday at 2:00 PM EDT. When you share we encourage you to write:

Southern Indie Bookstores go the distance. #gothedistance #SIBA20 #indiebookstores

Posted By Nicki Leone, Thursday, May 7, 2020

THIS! Thursday Inspiration with SIBA is SIBA's new informal virtual club on Thursday afternoons at 1 pm, where booksellers share things that are working for them. Less formal than a webinar, the program encourages conversation and the exchange of good ideas. Last Thursday's inaugural program featured Shari Stauch from Main Street Reads in Summervile, South Carolina, who demonstrated how she uses the social media tracking and scheduling service Metricool to manage her social media presence and grow her audience. Email Linda-Marie to be notified of upcoming topics.

Celebrate the Importance of Independent Bookstores on Amazon’s Prime Day

Posted By Linda-Marie Barrett, Wednesday, July 10, 2019

San Francisco’s Green Apple Books has created social media posts to bring attention to the value of indie bookstores on Amazon’s Prime Day, which begins Monday, July 15. Green Apple is encouraging all indie bookstores to make use of the posts, customizing with store photos that reflect the importance of shopping local and supporting community.

  • “On this #PrimeDay, remember that Amazon won’t bring scores of authors to your community for FREE events each year. #ShopLocal” (with a photo from an event or of a famous author at the store)

  • “On this #PrimeDay, remember that Amazon won’t entertain your kids with a FREE drag queen story hour. #ShopLocal” (with a photo from recent event)

  • “On this #PrimeDay, remember that you can’t get engaged to your fellow booklover at Amazon. #ShopLocal” (with a photo of a couple that recently got engaged at the store)

  • “On this #PrimeDay, remember that Amazon won’t reinvest all its money in your neighborhood to keep local cafes, restaurants, services, and schools thriving. #ShopLocal” (with a photo of neighboring shops)

  • “On this #PrimeDay, remember that Amazon won’t donate a gift card to your school fund-raiser. #ShopLocal” (with a photo of envelopes to schools with the store’s return address)

  • “On this #PrimeDay, remember that Amazon employees aren’t represented by a union. #ShopLocal #UFCW #ShopUnion” (with a photo of the store’s collective bargaining agreement)

  • “On this #PrimeDay, remember that you never have to pay an annual fee for $.99 shipping at #ShopLocal” (with a photo advertising 99-cent shipping on the store site)

Social media and content marketing can be stressful and confusing. Many booksellers need to know how to be more efficient and effective so the time and energy they spend marketing online has greater impact and creates results.

If you’ve seen Sarah Benoit, co-founder and lead instructor at the JB Media Institute, present at the ABA’s Winter or Children’s Institute, you know you’re learning from someone passionate about helping booksellers improve their social media and content marketing strategies. "The JB Media social media class is very well designed - its structure and flow can help any one at any level of social media expertise! This class is very adaptable to any schedule. The online lessons allow you to work completely at your own pace and Sarah is always available for questions and discussion. This class can answer just about any question regarding social media or content marketing that you have ever had and if the class itself can't, then Sarah can! Highly recommend!”-- John Cavalier, Cavalier House Books

"It's one thing to post a couple photos or links, or like a couple videos, and quite another to create a dynamic, engaging, and attractive presence online that enhances and compliments your real-world, brick-and-mortar business. JB Media's holistic approach to social media is the best I've seen for doing that. It goes far beyond just providing a series of tips or tricks to manage a Facebook page. Your course gives people the tools they need to navigate social media effectively and use it productively. You know the proverb "If you give a man a fish, you feed him for a day. If you teach a man to fish, you feed him for life"? JB Media teaches people how to fish.”--Nicki Leone, SIBA

Social Media and Content Marketing with Sarah Benoit

Posted By Nicki Leone, Wednesday, March 21, 2018

GREAT NEWS! SIBA is very pleased to announce a new self-guided course for booksellers on the art of using social media and content marketing:

Social Media and Content Marketing Basics for Booksellers: The Art of Increasing Reach and Engagement
with Sarah Benoit and the JB Media Institute.

April 16 - July 16

Sarah Benoit at EUREKAsibaSarah was one of the most popular presenters at both Winter Institute in Memphis and EUREKAsiba in Atlanta earlier this year. Not only did she receive enthusiastically positive feedback from attendees, she was pretty consistently mobbed by people with questions throughout the entire day in Atlanta and never once lost her smile or her enthusiasm. You'll note that there are two options for this course -- a "DIY" version for those of you who are comfortable taking online courses on your own, and the "Expert Support" version, which comes with live Q&As and access to "office hours" where you can talk to the instructors in person.

Social Media and Content Marketing Basics for BooksellersI do encourage you to sign up for the latter, if you can swing it. I am -- I am usually the kind of person that would work her way through an online course on her own. I think I've gone through half of that way! But I signed up for the Expert Support option because I want to pick Sarah Benoit's brain. I always have questions! As we all know, nothing beats being able to talk to a real person in real time about your real questions!

Those of you who attended EUREKAsiba already know how helpful and enthusiastic Sarah can be. But if you didn't have a chance to attend, take a few minutes to watch the video of her EUREKAsiba talk.

Social media and content marketing can be stressful and confusing. Many booksellers need to know how to be more efficient and effective so the time and energy they spend marketing online has greater impact and creates results.

Join Sarah Benoit and the JB Media Institute to learn the basic best practices and strategies the professionals use to share stories, build community, and grow your business.

Topics covered include:

  • content branding
  • keyword research
  • content calendars
  • Instagram and Facebook tracking
  • social media tracking on Google Analytics
  • Facebook and Instagram advertising
  • event marketing
  • and more
